We started our hike at the Horse Staging area (which added a little bit of distance to the loop). It was cool when we started (8:45am), but warmed up around 11:15am on the way down. We had two black dogs with us and brought 2.5 liters of water exclusively for them. It was enough, but just barely. Had it been a little warmer, I think they would have been very uncomfortable.

The trail was crowded until the Mesquite/Willow junction. It thinned out considerable as we made a right hand turned onto Willow. We practically had the backside of the mountain to ourselves.

Overall, this is a great hike for endurance. It doesn't have a terribly steep grade and the paths are very flat/manageable for the most part (with a few rocky exceptions).

Nice little jaunt starting on the south side of the mountain, going over and past the radio towers, and coming back down the paved side. Good, quick hike. The dogs enjoyed it, but the descent was very crowded.

Leisurely 3 day trip in the canyon. The goal was to unplug and not necessarily to make time. We hiked in and camped, day hiked the canyon on the 2nd day, and hiked out the third. I'm looking forward to going back with my wife.

I chose Bell Trail to the Crack, but only because the trail we took does not have a listed route and I am too tired to post one. We parked in the Bell Trail parking area and took a vehicle north to Waldroup Tank to park. We entered into Waldroup Canyon via a stoney wash that took us on a 5-6 mile blistering hot journey of ankle twists, frustration, and dehydration. Nothing is quite as discouraging as running out of water about the same time that you realize you don't know where the hell you are. After a few steep drop offs, we made it to Beaver Creek. What a reprieve! We immediate pumped and gulped a liter of water a piece. Afterward, we swam through 2-3 pools before deciding to camp for the night. We awoke to the sounds of a steer and heifer in our camp. We quickly learned that the steer did not like being approached head on. We broke camp, ran through some cacti to escape the charging bovine, and finally located an actual trail. Little did we know, but we were already past the tongue (which is where the wash puked us into Beaver Creek). We had missed the majority of Wet Beaver Creek. This deflating reality could only be compounded by swarms of No See-Ums, from which I still have whelps from head to hoof.

Now, I'm not a novice hiker, but this "adventure" was a humbling reminder that failure to properly plan and execute can turn your pleasant, relaxing weekend jaunt into an irritating and stressful knotted rope of infected bug bites.

Great place, but very crowded. Very few of the hikers that we saw understood "pack it in and pack it out." Despite this, the place is still gorgeous.

We hiked down to the confluence on a Thursday and didn't see a soul until our hike out on Saturday. The water was pretty chilly, but the sandy beach makes for a great campsite. We saw a snake on the trail, but it was just a gopher snake.

Take an extra bag for trash and carry some out with you, as there was plenty of trash from previous campers around the area.

Also, be careful on the way down...that last half mile is some nasty, loose rock.

It was a hot day, but a great hike. The trail is mostly loose gravel and dirt, so be ready to slip a bit. The road is unpaved, but does not require a special vehicle (we managed just fine in a sedan). Enjoy.

A good three days in the in the Blue Primitive Area. Started at the Fritz Ranch and made our way NE to the Little Blue. We camped just NW of the slot canyons. The ground was a bit rocky, but it was manageable and made for a great staging area.

The springs were a nice reprieve the next morning. The man-made pool is not spectacular, but the temperature of the water will certainly open your eyes. A larger pool below the man-made pool is much more comfortable and is deep enough for a full body soak. We spent the rest of the time exploring the slot canyon and cliff jumping. There is a great spot for a quick jump at the beginning of the slot canyon, about a .25 of a mile before the hot springs. I made a video of our trip if you want to see more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxDtYONI-T0

Hardly a mouth-drying, foot blistering hike. But, it was a nice stroll with a friend and was conducive to casual conversation. Probably won't make the trip again unless I live on the sucker and feel like trail running.

I knew the moment I stepped out of the car in the trailhead parking lot that the Arizona summer was upon me. The sun singed my bare shoulders in its far from subtle announcement that 105 degree weather had arrived. Undaunted, I laced up my Danners, wrapped my head with my v-shirt, scooped up my modest 1.5 liters of water, and began moving my boots into the Catalina Mountains.

The first mile or so was a pleasant nature hike along a well traveled path made of soft beach sand. The grade matured into a rocky staircase shortly after mile one and, from there, ebbed and flowed with stone steps and flat, cliff-side walkways. Just as the heat was beginning to steal some of my vigor, I caught a glimpse of the water at the canyon base. My strength instantly renewed, and I charged the last 1/4 mile of the undulating path until it fully descended into the canyon.

At first glance, the Pools did not appear sanitary or welcoming, but after closer inspection (including the splashing of some of the cool water on my now sun burnt body). I realized it was a literal oasis. I geared down and eased into the second pool, emitting a sigh of relief that had been an hour in the making. The "spot" could not have been "hit" any harder. According to some of the local visitors, there is ample camping nearby, but I did not take time to investigate or check with the rangers to see if camping is permitted.

I did, however, have the unfortunate experience of meeting a young guy who was mourning the loss of one of his dogs. He had brought 5 pooches up the mountain on this exceedingly hot day without adequate water. One of his poor pups succumbed to the heat along the way. As I felt sufficiently hydrated, and empathetic, I gave the young guy the last of my water, wished him well, and headed back. When I reached the parking lot, I called his brother and told him of the situation. I hope the cavalry was able to help. From that day on, I now promise to carry with me a TUB (Trail Underestimator Bottle) of water for the ill prepared when hiking in the AZ summer.

Beautiful hike. It was difficult, but we were adequately prepared and were able to fully enjoy the experience as a result. More detail to follow. Quick tips:

- Bring neoprene socks.
- Bring a walking stick or poles.
- Water is not a problem, but be sure to stop at the marked springs and filter as much as needed.
- If there is a chance of rain, bring water proof clothing/pack covering.
- Be sure to take the side trip to Wrather Arch.

This hike took some time off my life. The trail finding is very easy (as is the hike)...until you get to the fence. Once you cross under the barbed wire fence, get ready to have cacti and brush scrape several inches of flesh from you legs. Additionally, the "trail" is nearly impossible to find. I'm glad I did this hike (as the vistas were marvelous), but I will not be attempting it again.

This is a fantastic hike. We attempted this hike in September of 2008, but our 2 wheel drive Ford Ranger got stuck in the sand on the way to the trailhead and we ran out of time. Our second trip to the trailhead was successful as we brought a 4x4, but after seeing the Prius in the parking lot I am convinced proper driving can get you there just fine.

The trail starts off as a fairly gentle slope that goes on for about the first hour. The final push, however, is much steeper and requires you to follow the rock stack trail markers to find your way to the summit.

The summit...is unbelievable. Hands down the best 360 degree vistas in the valley. Plus, the large quartz deposit at the top is incredible in and of itself.

I highly recommend this hike to anyone who doesn't mind the hike it takes to get there.

First off - the weather was perfect. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with partly cloudy skies and a breezy 74 degrees. The hike starts at the "Discovery Trail" (which links the parking lot to the real trailhead). After a brief half mile, you begin the ascent up Superstition toward the Siphon Draw Basin and Flatiron (trail #53). The beginning of the trail is mostly loose rock with a slight grade. At the base of the mountain the trail matures into a much rockier and aggressive hike. The 2 miles (or so) that follow involve a lot of step work and a little climbing. It is challenging, but we encountered people of all ages on the trail, so don't be too intimidated. The trail is well marked with white and blue paint and all that is really required to summit is some will, energy, and a lot of water.

An incredibly hot trip, but well worth the sweat.

We arrived at the trailhead just before 8:00am, and that was not nearly early enough. The trail is mostly flat for the first 2 miles or so, but then it quickly steepens into a very sharp grade. The drastic change in the difficulty of the trail came just as the sun was starting to really get hot. The trail is dirt for the majority of the hike, but has some concrete portions where the trail is at its most aggressive.

The summit is less than serene due to the communications facility, but the view is still beautiful and presents a unique perspective of the valley. One of my favorite views of any hike in the valley to date.
