| | | 3rd trip up to Mazzy peak, had to change it up this time..
Brought the dog, which until we started off trail up to the peak was not a problem at all.. Poor girl kept getting snagged on bushes and logs, and kept flashing me that look like "really, what happened to that nice trail we were on" anyways, she pushed on and made it to the summit. We hung out at the summit for a good while, and as JuanJameiii decided to leave before the group i went down the north face with him to find some shade and relax. As we met with Dennis Williams -making his way up the north face- a white tail startled out of the brush below us and took off west down the slope.. We all went our ways, Dennis to the summit, JuanJameiii headed down, and Ebba and I laid in the shade and relaxed.
About an hour later i decided i was tired of waiting for the group up top, so i just headed down solo.. the creek was flowing from all the snow melt, and it drew me into the ravine, where eventually i ran into a nice 40-50 ft waterfall with some snow still clinging to its edges. at this point i just committed to the ravine and a reluctant dog followed. We slowly progressed, even scaring a group of six elk up on the hillside.. We bush-whacked, and boulder hoped down to the main falls overlooking barnhardt. I skipped across the creek to find a route off the falls and turned back to see Ebba sliding down the waterfall over about 20 feet of slick wet rock and crash into a pool of water about 40 feet below me. Again i got the look. Luckily i was able to get her out, only after slipping myself and taking a nice dip in the cold pool as well.. We navigated the ledge, with even more doggy reluctance at this point, now having a healthy fear of heights and ledges she made this part extra difficult on me. Finally we touched down on actual trail, and headed back to the truck where she found a good spit of shade and laid down for the rest of the afternoon.
Im still not sure which is a better route down, the ravine, or suicide ridge. the ravine offers up 3 waterfalls of over 30 feet, the ridge offers a little easier travel. pick your poison i guess.. |
