We took advantage of the cool temps on Tuesday to see if the falls were running after the saturating rains we've had. It was a good hike with cool temps and not a soul to be seen surprisingly on such a nice day. You could hear the streams well before you came upon them. It was one and a half hours to the falls. The rocks were covered with ice, as was the surrounding vegetation. We spent a lot of time at the falls. We lunched on the cliffs over looking Massacre grounds, and on the way back took a off trail side trip to the grounds, and tried to imagined what took place against those cliffs. There are cairns along the way, but the vegetation is tall and thick this spring.

We did this hike clockwise, and the first time on Cavalry Trail, the cairns on cavalry are huge. Cavalry was quite overgrown with catclaw as was the stretch of Dutchmans from Cavalry to Terrapin. We took a 40 minute lunch near white rock spring, but could not locate it. There were pools of water coming down second water canyon. We saw 4 rabbits, 1 squirrel, and zero bipeds = Serenity

We left the parking lot a 9:15 am and the temp was 43. We reached the mines at 12:30 and had to put on our hats and gloves as we gained elevation. I wish I knew the temp at the top. I am sure it was cold as ice had formed in the water trough that has being feed from the mine water. We wore our rain coats as wind breakers as we descended. The temp at the car at 3:30 was 40. There were some very colorful sections in the canyons, but the cold snap that day might have finished it off.

First hour was harder than the second hour but the last 40 minutes up to the saddle was strenous. When we started up to the top we thought the storms were blowing away. We reached the top of Mt. Humphrey's from the saddle in an hour. Not 5 minutes after reaching the top the wind started picking up, we heard thunder & saw a big front coming in so we only stayed 10 minutes on top. We quickly got off the top in a raging snow blizzard. The temperature dropped a good 20 degrees. We kept our quick pace until we were well into the tree line. We encountered snow on the trail & of course quite allot of snow from the saddle to the top. We even beat a bunch of Boy Scouts to the top. Not bad for our age. Only saw two other women on the trail.
