Hiked this loop "trail" again to see the condition. It has only gotten worse. We started at the top and worked counter clockwise around the loop, going down the switchbacks to deer creek, up to the Mt. Peeley trailhead, and then took the road from there back to the Davey Gowan trailhead. The section down the switchbacks is completely overgrown and we had to "swim" through a half mile of bushes. The 120ft GPS route did keep us on "trial" but most all the flags folks have put up have disintegrated over the last few years. I love this area but I cannot recommend this "trail".

It was a beautiful day in the desert. We went clock wise down Spur Cross then over Elephant Mountain and back to the trailhead via Tortuga (totally missed the Fortress but found ruin #70 on a bench off Spur Cross trial). I believe we found lion tracks (large, round overall shape, 4 oval toe pads, no claw marks) around the intersection of Elephant mountain trail and Tortuga. Is that possible?

Thanks to Grasshopper and GPSJoe, I did not even use my GPS to stay on trail today, they did a great job flagging the route. They took what was a very unfollowable, extreme, 13hr bushwacking hike and turned it into a manageable (though masochistic, as Joe described it) day hike. I did not know Joe but I know he loved this area and the challenges it possesses; I will think of his strength, persistence, and his love of the outdoors every time I visit the Mazatzals.

Made it 6.5 miles up the south fork before turning around, creek was flowing real strong, mid calf deep at most crossing but many cairns and stepping stones, full-high top waterproof boots needed right after these big storms. Really great 30ft waterfall about 3.5 miles in. Plan was to sleep in the cabin ruin but never found it and had to settle for the lee side of a ridge.

Trail was non-existent for most of the trail when I completed this hike solo in Aug. 2009. I started at dawn from Mt. Peeley TH (going up the road) and finished right after sundown back at Mt. Peeley TH. Bushwacked the whole mid section using GPS waypoints. I did spook a bull elk at 30yds near a spring in a cut above the creek. Hike was extreme.

Not sure exactaly when I did this hike but this date is close enough until I can find my pictures. I shouldn't have done this hike on a 109 degree day! It was nice going in early in the morning and on top of the breezy Mesa but the walk out on the desert floor nearly did me in (I stayed on top a little to long). It was funny because I had plenty of water but the loss of salt and running out of food started giving me heat stroke and hallucinations. On the upside, I did see my first desert tortoise on the way out.
