Parked on Oakridge Dr in Corona. Pretty straight-forward ascent, just follow the super steep trail/road. There are no switchbacks and it's literally straight up the whole way. Two hairy sections: first one gained 110ft in .05 mi, second gained about 350ft in .2mi. These sections were incredibly slippery - very tedious on the way down. Basically came down on all fives for the first one.

Views were exceptional today. The skies were full of puffy clouds and the breeze kept the bugs away for most of the trek. The Big Three mountain ranges were shrouded in haze so I spent most of the time looking at Corona and the rest of the bottom of the Inland Empire. Spent a lot of my childhood in Corona so it's cool to see it from up high.

Someone placed a wildlife camera right off the trail about halfway up. I waved on the way up and did my best Happy Gilmore bull-riding impression w/my trekking poles on the way down.

Parked off Piuma Road at about 720ft elevation. Very misty and foggy to start but I was soon above the inversion and in the sun. The first couple miles were absolutely littered with spider webs - perfect for my arachnophobia. Ended up waving my trekking pole in front of me for the entire ascent to be safe.

Visited the east summit first. Views were limited to the north and a little to the east. Nothin' but fog to the south so no ocean views today. Walked over to the west summit/highpoint to find the gate open and a man standing at one of the radio buildings. I yelled to him to see if he'd grant me permission to enter and he sure didn't. Walked back to the midpoint between the two summits and had my PB&J on a convenient bench.

Encountered two rattlers on the way down - one of which I damn near stepped on. The second hissed at me from the bushes, then gave me a brief rattle before I fled the scene. Haven't heard that noise come out a snake before, must have been right off trail because it was loud. Whole lotta nope!

Between the spiders and snakes, I think this one took a year off my life expectancy. Anyone have a cigarette?

edit: seems fitting for my 666th triplog :D

Parked at the top of Terrebonne Avenue. Passed through an opening in the metal gate which halts unauthorized vehicle access. The gate is signed 'no hunting, no stopping,' etc. There were other signs further in which said no trespassing - figured it was for vehicles at that point. Even more signs in the middle of the ascent that said no public access, experimental forest or something like that. Well, I was already there so uhh...

Kept a good pace all the way up to Johnstone and was totally drenched in sweat by the time I arrived. It's a decent climb. Great views (albeit hazy at lower elevations), several deer, some benchmarks, and a memorial at the top. Some amazing views of Baldy up there. The snow from last week's storm is mostly gone already - it's been warm af.

Passed another vehicle on the way down, this time the driver informed me I was on private property so I won't be doing this one again (not that it's beckoning). Looks like there's a few parcels of land between Terrebonne Avenue and the national forest boundary higher up. Probably okay to approach from the west or east if you're looking to be a good, law abiding citizen.

After hiking Cunningham Mountain on Sunday afternoon, I drove through Blythe and stayed the night at Mayflower Regional Park. For about $40, you get a well-manicured, grassy campsite right on the Colorado River and clean restrooms - would stay again if I had any reason at all to be in Blythe.

I got up around 7am, after copious alarms went unheeded. I broke camp and hit the road by 8am. Figured I'd head home and save Orocopia for another day. Got a little spark of energy driving down the 10 and decided to go for it after all.

The drive from I-10 to the trailhead wasn't a problem for my Subaru. The road is a little sandy throughout with some pretty deep ruts along the curves- easy enough to stay on top of them. The crux of the road is a steep hill approx .4mi shy of the parking area. Turns out it was a piece of cake for my car/tire combo. Three cheers for not walking further than you have to!

Started the hike around 9:30am. From the looks of it, the first bit of trail is an old Jeep trail of sorts that nature has reclaimed. After about a mile, it turns into a use-trail mixed with some light cross-country depending on your route. Guess I neglected to look closely at the elevation profile before heading out because all of the ups and downs were news to me.

You get a good view of the peak itself right before heading up the final push. The views from the top are exceptional - snow capped Gorgonio and Jacinto, Salton Sea, and all of the desert peaks surrounding the I-10 corridor. Headed back the same way for the most part, however I did skirt around some smaller hills to avoid extra elevation gain and a tiny shortcut to avoid some extra mileage. My dogs were barking after two days of getting my hike chops beaten back into me.

While I was getting ready to jump in the car and take off, I heard what sounded like a massive gust of wind approaching me. I wasn't sure how to react. I couldn't see anything nearby and I've never heard a gust come at me like that. Turns out, it was the biggest swarm of bees I've ever seen in my life. Flew right over me without issue as they do. Pretty cool to see once I realized what was happening lol

I've driven by Cunningham too many times to count and it was finally time to get all up on it. Took off from Mesa around 11am and reached the parking area around 2pm. The dirt road in from 95 is in good shape - I'm always happy to have my beefier tires and there were no clearance issues to contend with.

Obviously the grade is super steep so not the fastest ascent. The southerly views of the Dome Rock Mountains are killer. Somewhere just below the summit, I walked toward the edge of the service road to get some pictures - to my surprise there was a gila monster sitting right there soaking up the sun. What are the odds!

Snapped some shots at the summit, admired the views of the Colorado River, then got the fork outta there. Ended up lightly jogging a good portion of the descent. Way easier than holding back momentum on the steep road.

Cool peak, worth the effort. The hardest part is being even remotely close to Quartzsite. :sk:

Out & back on Boulder Canyon, good weather and not too crowded. Gotta come back for the whole trail sometime. For some reason this is only like the second hike I've ever done in the Superstitions - serves as a great introduction to a place I knew would deliver the goods.

Parked on Holmes and took Schabarum Skyline Trail up to Workman Hill. From there, I took Workman Ridge west, then back up via Worsham Canyon Trail. Good lasso loop.

Cool views of Downtown LA, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina, etc. Workman Hill is another great vantage point that's right in the middle of everything.

A clear day w/some clouds + green grass everywhere + big mountain views = a drug

Beautiful cruise up to San Juan Hill. It's a road walk but with the lush vegetation everywhere, it felt like singletrack. Cool views of Catalina Island out west to San Jacinto in the east, the latter of which had a small fire burning in its vicinity- looks like it is/was a prescribed burn.

It took some time to get to the parking area from the park entrance. Obviously it was busy from the holiday, but the main park road is very narrow (one lane in a few spots). Coupled with a ton of pedestrians walking up and down the street, it was a mad house. The hike was super secluded, though.

Clockwise lollipop loop from Black Canyon Campground

First couple miles were wide and sandy- kinda forgettable - but once the elevation kicks in and you top out on the ridgeline, it’s so worth it. Great views of the giants San Jacinto and Gorgonio.

Beautiful weather, good day for a stroll

Parked at Claremont Station and biked east to Rialto Station. $6 for the train ride back to the car - a little pricey considering Pomona to Long Beach is only $1.75. Great mountain views the entire way, leaves changing colors, beautiful weather - what more could you ask for?

Through one of the "flatter sections" of neighborhood. I'm outta shape so I cut the ride short by 2 miles. Much easier mentally once you accept that you'll have to walk up some of the steeper hills.

Been outta the game for a while. Decided to tackle this hill/ridgeline at the NE end of Puente Hills. Wanted to check out the first snowfall of the season. Pretty easy road-walk with two quick, steep sections.

Stretching my legs after seeing how nice it was this afternoon. Decided to hit Buzzard instead of driving out to Riverside for Rubidoux. This is a pretty uneventful but lovely trail, smack dab between two neighborhoods. The peak is a great vantage point with views of Downtown LA's skyline, the Santa Anas, and the San Gabriels right across the valley.

No knee issues today. Gotta build it back up from scratch again, starting today.

This mountain has been on my to-do list since I was a kid. The monstrosity that is San Bernardino Peak towers over Yucaipa and is visible from practically anywhere in town. I spent the majority of my childhood there and would gaze up at the peak in awe every day. This was back before I knew hiking trails were a thing- I assumed the only way to get up there was to go directly up the massive, treacherous, western slope. Needless to say, today brought younger me some long overdue closure.

I hit the trail at 4:30am with only one other car in parked at the trailhead. Evidently San Gorgonio is far more popular as all of its permits were already spoken for, meanwhile SB Peak had plenty of availability on this Labor Day weekend. I would say that the views on this one are waaay better, the only difference is SG is higher.

By the time the sun rose, I was making my way through the beginning of Manzanita Flats, about 3 miles in. I could see the slopes of San Bernardino ahead of me and a killer display of alpenglow hitting the Inland Empire to my right. I did my best to maintain a subdued but steady pace to try and avoid any knee problems later on. Spotted a pack of deer crossing the trail, looked like they were taking off from Manzanita/Columbine Springs.

After the mild mile through Manzanita Flats, the trail begins the second portion of climbing up to Limber Pine Bench and Washington Monument. I threw on some old AFI to help push through the elevation gain. The views of the San Bernardino Mountains were extraordinary during golden hour. I took my primary lunch break at an overlook just before the monument, taking in the views of Mill Creek Canyon, Yucaipa, and beyond.

From the overlook to San Bernardino Peak is roughly 8/10ths of a mile. The peak is a little underwhelming with trees on all sides. However, I was able to catch some sweet views of San Gorgonio and San Jacinto on the eastern side of the summit.

Passed only 10 or 11 parties on the way down - still impressive for Labor Day weekend. The clouds were moving in which helped keep the sun at bay during most of the descent. Still super warm (90 degrees) at the car.

My knee started barking with about 5 miles to go and taking it slow didn't help too much. Gonna have to take some time off to let it heal up, which means my Big Sur hike this weekend is postponed. This hike was super rewarding and unbelievably scenic, though, so I'm cool with that.

Up Mount Baldy Road to Thunder Mountain. Nice views during sunrise, but the peak's a little underwhelming. It's the top of the ski lift and likely more exciting in winter. From Thunder, I headed down Three Ts Trail and up to Telegraph Peak - much more satisfying up there. Three Ts is good single-track, while the other 10 miles are a road-walk.

Some light cloud cover built up during my descent, providing some cool light changes on the landscape. Haven't really seen clouds on a hike at all in the last two months so I'll take what I can get.

This is training hike 2 of 4 in the next couple weeks, gradually leading up a long, special day at the beginning of September. I feel pretty good about everything, except my knee is getting weird around 12 miles which is not cool. Hoping I can figure that out in the next two weeks.

Essentially did the red "strenuous" perimeter loop, however, I started in Moro Canyon and hit No Name Ridge/Pacific Ridge(?) via West Cut Across. Some truly magnificent trail names in this area...
Rounded out the NW side of the loop by visiting Coastal Peak Park then hitting Bommer Trail on the north side.

Very warm at 6:30am and it didn't really cool off at all until a light breeze kicked in at the end. Enjoyed seeing the western side of the Santa Ana Mountains and of course the big drink. Took a quick dip to cool off after the hike - you might as well make the most of the $15 parking fee.

No snake sightings, but I did see multiple tracks in the dirt from them crossing the road.
