Led a hike for the Estrella Mountain Warriors hiking group this morning at Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Only one taker, Christine, joined me for a counter clockwise loop from the Nature Center on Quail, Rainbow Valley, Dysart, Toothaker, Connector to Baseline, Baseline, Saddle back down to Quail, and Quail to the Nature Center.

I asked at the ranger station upon entry why they were writing down annual pass numbers instead of just typing them into the computer. The attendant told me the park system migrated the pass system to a new platform which reassigned all pass holders a new ID. So, they have to write down your old number, then look it up and type in your new number. She wrote my new number on my pass, so it will save them a step on future visits. And, while speaking of Maricopa County annual passes, the county will vote Dec 10th on whether to raise the annual fee from $85 to $120. The new rate will take effect on Jan 1st.

Sunset ride with neighbor Craig on FINS trails tonight. Did a nice counter clockwise loop on Spent Spade, Kimurel's Hurl (which just reopened after maintenance), Kim's Climb, Bearclaw, Hurts Donut, Northeast Passage, Entrance, Joey's Jaunt, FINS Access, Wayne's World, Rainbow Valley, Spade Connector, Muriel's Mile, and back out on the pipeline access road parallel to 185th Ave. Stopped to chat for a bit with a guy on a Orbea Wild eMTB, and a woman taking a picture of the nearly full moon with her iPhone on a tripod.

Decided to beat myself up a bit today on the Estrella Pirate trails. Started in the Estrella Foothills Community Park and jumped on Sunrise to Park Ave, Rum Runner, Grasky, Black Beard, Queen Anne's Revenge back to Grasky, Up Yonder, Up There, Pirate's Cove, Black Jack, Jump Line, back to Sunrise trail and the parking lot. Saw a couple hiking on Rum Runner and QAR, and 4 mountain bikers. There's a mountain bike race this Saturday (Dec 6) starting on the Estrella Pirate trails with the 47 mile loop extending on to Estrella Mountain Regional Park trails. Desert is so green right now!

AZ Fat Bike group ride at MMRP this morning. 6 fat bikes, including me, 1 mountain bikers, and 1 ebiker. Started from the 4 Peaks staging area and headed north north Shallmo Wash, Tortoise, Wagner, and Granite. Then south on Stoneman Wash all the way to McDowell Mountain Road where we picked up the Competitive Track Long Loop back to the staging area. I threw in a quick lap on Short Loop to finish the day. No problems riding in Stoneman Wash as the sand/gravel was firm.

Took the fat bike out for an adventure ride after all the storms last week. Started in FINS and picked up Lum Wash north all the way to the Gila River. Lum Wash has an abundance of sand with tall vertical carved out walls. Found a boat near the Gila River end. Headed east on the predominately bumpy river rock of the Gila River to Cotton Lane. Rode the bridge over and back then hit the Lucero trails between Cotton Lane and Estrella Parkway out to the circle. Crossed Estrella Parkway and followed Sunrise trail (Estrella Loop) south past Estrella Foothills High School and then followed Maricopa trail back to FINS and home. Saw some hikers on Lucero trails, a big group of hikers on Sunrise trail, and a number of people who appeared to be picking up trail in the Gila River under Cotton Lane bridge.

Harem hike with Dan, Carey, and Christina. Met up at Lost Dog trailhead and took Sunrise trail up to the summit. Lots of parking available at Lost Dog. Plenty of hikers, many with dogs, and 3 bikers peddling up the hill. Crazy windy and a little chilly this morning.

Forecast was sketchy and I was beat up from pickleball last night, so I opted for a shorty on FINS trails. Lots of damage from this week's storms. Did a hike a bike up North Star trail and down Shooting Star trail. Stopped to chat with a hiker, 75 year old Gene, for a bit at the top of Brian's Brink. Saw one other biker and a hiker out on the trails.

Took the weekend off and took the fat bike out to hit the EMRP sand loop. Started from Estrella Foothills Community Park and took the sandy 2 track out to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Then Crossover to Pedersen clockwise to Toothaker, Gadsden, Pedersen south to Homestead clockwise to Pedersen all the way around back to Crossover, Jolly Roger, Doubloon, Rum Runner, Park Ave, and Sunrise back to the Community Park. Cool 50 degree start to the ride. I was nursing a slow leak in the rear tire throughout the ride. Didn't see anyone out on the trails this morning.

Sunday Sand Day on the fat bike on Rainbow Valley / Estrella Foothills desert 2 track. Made my way out from Bougainvillea Park at Callistoga and Estrella Parkway east along the EMRP fenceline, over to the power line road, quick jaunt out to the Hayes Peak trailhead, back then over to the boyscout camp, back past the shooters. Fast line back.

Busy week, haven't been on a bike since Sunday! Made up for it this morning with a ride over the rough north Pirate UP trails in Estrella Mountain Ranch. The local trail group has been out doing trail repairs in preparation for an upcoming mountain bike race and I was fortunate enough to ride on some epic trail conditions. Of course, there's still plenty of rocks, rocks, rocks, to make up for it. Parked at Safeway, behind the Walgreens, crossed Estrella Parkway to the east and caught the end of Elliot over to the Pirate up trails. Started on What UP, then down Coyote, Pirate's Cove to 1UP loop back to Pirate's Cove, Scallywag back on to What UP, Hook UP, clockwise on Beam Me UP, Saddle UP to Upper Pass, Round UP down to Estrella Parkway, Tunnel trail (which was dry) under Estrella Parkway, Road Runner, Cottontail over to Cotton Lane, crossed at the circle and picked up Estrella Loop (Market) behind Safeway which comes out on San Gabriel drive, through the parking lot back to the truck. Saw two hikers on Round UP trail, we chatted a bit before continuing on our way.

Another great hike on EMRP trails with the Warriors (Nina, Jennifer) this morning. Started at the Nature Center just as the November Beaver Supermoon was setting in the west, we did a counter clockwise loop on Quail, Rainbow Valley, Dysart, Toothaker, Horseshoe, Baseline, and Saddle trails. Saw one biker, a trail runner, and a few other hikers.

Rode Copper Mountain Loop of the Black Canyon Trail with my Bagel Bunch group (Doug, Jane, Johnny, Venjo, Joseph). Did this loop back in July of 2020 with Carey, so it's been awhile. Trail overall is in pretty good shape. There are some sections that have rain damage, but it's not terrible. catclaw was almost non-existent, which was not the case back in 2020. I got a little banged up from a crash, as did some other's on the ride. I'll probably be sore tomorrow. We started from the Big Bug Trailhead which has a spotless pit toilet. Jumped on the Black Canyon Trail and took the tunnel under 69. We did the Copper Mountain Loop counter clockwise, which is the recommended direction. Didn't see any other trail users, but there were 3 horse trailers back at the trail head when we returned. Super fun and just the right amount of challenge for 15 miles. Weather was perfect.

Exploring farm and desert roads in Rainbow Valley south of Estrella Mountain Ranch. I had scoped out some routes last week on the fat bike, so I managed to miss the worst of the sand on the gravel bike this morning. Spent most of my time south of Pecos, west of 155th Ave, north of Riggs, and east of Rainbow Valley road. To my surprise, I saw one mountain biker on 171st between Queen Creek and Ocotillo, neither of us seemed in the mood to stop and chat, so on our ways we went. Stayed mostly on power line and canal roads with recent tire tracks - which is usually a good bet that you won't get fenced in.

Great hike with the Estrella Warriors (Nina, Jennifer) on EMRP trails this morning. Surprise to see some folks in the entrance station this morning, new trainees, checking passes and collecting money. We started from the Nature Center for a windy hike up Quail trail, counter clockwise on Rainbow Valley to Toothaker, north back to Rainbow Valley to Baseline for a bit to Saddle back to the Nature Center. Saw a couple of other hikers and one biker.
