Went up to Flag today to beat the heat in Phoenix. We did Jedi up to the meadow and came back on Rocky Ridge trail. Found a massive logging operation underway with road and trail closures. Jedi was pretty devastated with fallen trees everywhere. Luckily I had GPS track from the last time and we found our way.

3rd FINS hike, this time from the front door of my new home. Met up with Courtland Josh, who just so happened to close on his home the exact same day as me! Brisk 71 degree start at 5am. Saw two other hikers out on the trail this morning. Looks like I'm really going to love my new home!

Did a short, early, beat the heat, in-town hike this weekend. One of my favorite loops in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Most of the harem hadn't been on this loop before, so it was quite the treat. Ambulance was taking someone out when we got there at 5:20. Parking lots are under construction, cars parked everywhere along the entrance road. Trail stewards were doing maintenance on the east side trails. Humidity was up, we were soaked. Post hike treats at Snooze were excellent!

Got out with the Harem for a 4th of July hike near my new Goodyear home. Moved in the previous Saturday (June 29th), I needed a break from unpacking and hanging ceiling fans! Parking lot was full @ 6am.

Was planning on taking the harem up to Prescott, but with the Badger Springs fire closing the I-17 on Friday night and cooler temps in Phoenix, decided to go out to Lake Pleasant and do the Walking Jim/Little Jim loop. First vehicle in the parking area @ 5:30. Lots of trash at the trailhead, mattress, blankets, etc. Had the whole trail to ourselves with the exception of 2 burros spotted in the wash near the end of our trek. Lot's of well worn burro trails all over the place makes staying on the main trail difficult, especially on the Little Jim section and the southern return.

Return to Lost Canyon this week. This time we drove up FS152 to the Brin's Mesa trail and started from there to see if we could connect up with where we left off last week. Made a side trip to the upper ruins. As stated before, it takes some effort to get there. Observed the lower ruins from the cliff side high above. Continued around on the easy to follow trail and did make it all the way to where we left off last week. There are some sketchy sections, but nothing as terrible as we had imagined. Turned back and followed a side trail down the mesa to FS152 and followed the road back to the Jeep. Didn't see a single person on the trail and we were the sole vehicle at the trail head.

Took the harem up to Sedona to check out PreskitJim's Lost Canyon Loop. Parked at Mescal trailhead and took Chuckwagon Trail over to Devil's Bridge trail. We started relatively early so the people traffic was still low on Devil's Bridge. Headed east on a well defined trail off Devil's Bridge for our start to the Lost Canyon Loop. Trail predictably faded as we gained distance from the attraction. Wasn't long before trail was impossible to find at places, GPS track kept us going in the right direction. All 6 of us were shedding blood before long pushing our way through brush and getting poked by cactus and agave. Made it to the eastern most saddle with spectacular views down to Soldier's Pass and Brin's Mesa trails. Found a trail that headed southeast down in to the valley, may have to return to see if it connects up to Soldier's Pass trail. Another trail heads up into the rock formations (north), hard to find the start, but well defined heading up. After some exploring we continued on Lost Canyon Loop, now heading west along the shelf. The shelf trail gets pretty narrow and off camber. Gallydoll and I tried to push through the brush above, but the rest of the crew revolted and we ended turning back to retrace our steps. I think we had a harder time trailfinding on the way back then we did on the way in! Devil's Bridge was now under a full onslaught of visitors and we found ourselves pushing our way though the masses. Hot day, 86 degrees back at the trailhead. 50 cent Frosty's at Wendys in Oak Creek for post hike treats!

I had the harem out on Hangover last week and spotted another group heading up the north side of Windows Rock. My topo map showed a trail up the south side so we went out to investigate. I was reluctant believe that we would actually find a trail since the topo maps tend to be wildly inaccurate. To my surprise, there was the remnants of a trail to follow and follow it we did. There's one spot where the trail splits that we missed and doubled back to follow the spur up to the Windows. We followed the fearless Gallydoll up the slickrock and watched her summit from a safe distance. We enjoyed the slickrock views and got buzzed by some angry birds debating on whether they were swallows or falcons, then returned to the split and continued the loop back to Huckaby. I can't say I was 100% sure that we'd make it back to Huckaby, but we did and since we were so close to Oak Creek, we ventured down to see the water. We returned to the trailhead on Huckaby stopping to take lots of pictures of the flowering cactus along the way. Absolutely beautiful day to be in Sedona. Since we finished early, we treated ourselves to BAR-B-QUE at Lucky's in Dewey on the way back to Phoenix.

Fantastic day to head up to Sedona and sneak in a hike before the rains came in with Yolanda, Carey, Mel, and Trish. Drove up the bumpy Schnebly Hill road to Cow Pies trailhead, high clearance required (bottomed out the jeep a couple of time on the way back down). Breathtaking views. Spotted a group of hikers heading up to Window Rock, which is now on my wish list. Lots of traffic on Schnebly Hill road, an endless line of pink jeep tours and side by sides. Running water in the creek aside of the road.

Cool start to the hike at 6:30, in the 40's. (In case you didn't know, the gate doesn't open until 6:00AM, so don't get too early of a start). I had seven on my team for the hike, me being the slowest helped to keep the road runners in check. Great hike to the viewpoints and some rock play at the top. We got some great horny toad pics. Some water seeps coming out of the side of the mountain and in the normally dry washes below. And, if you didn't know, the trailhead is a fee area ($5) or display your National Park pass.

I had been wanting to do the Upper Ruins for almost a decade now after having visited the lower ruins. SCA, Henry, Jan, and Yolanda joined me for this trip. TNM now charges an entry fee, so be sure to bring your National Park Pass if you have one. I had to make this reservation 5 weeks out to get in and lucky we did as this is the last weekend of the season for the ranger led tours to the upper ruins. We had 14 total in our group not including the two rangers. The trek stops on a regular basis on the way to the ruins to allow the non-hardcore hikers a chance to catch up and take a breather. There's a spring that runs year round that you get to walk through, which on our trip, was a gauntlet of flying insects. Keep your head down and you'll be through in no time :) At a break after the spring, enjoying the shade of the sycamore trees and a ranger story, I spotted a snake, in a tree no less. Since when did they start putting snakes in trees? It's bad enough I have to look for them under my feet, but above my head, that's just not fair! Anyway, the group checked out my easter egg discovery and we continued up the switchbacks to the ruins. Much of the ruins are now off limits to tours due to stabilization issues and may reopen in the future once some restoration has been completed. The views and ranger stories were excellent, my group all enjoyed our visit to this hidden gem.
