Great hike with Nina this morning at EMRP. Did the Rainbow Valley loop counter clockwise from the Nature Center. Got my first scan of my new Maricopa County Parks Pass 2D barcode. There were a few other hikers out on the trails this morning. Didn't see any bikers.

Rode out of the garage this morning through FINS to Maricopa trail (FINS to Dogbone) then south and west on the farm roads to Germann and Rainbow Valley roads, south on 175th ave, east on Queen Creek road, south on 173rd Ave, east on Ocotillo, south on 171st ave until it deadended at Chandler Heights, had to jump the fence, east on Chandler Heights, north on 159th ave, east on Ocotillo again, north on what would be Litchfield back to Germann, northwest along the power lines and west on Willis to Estrella Parkway, then through the neighborhoods back home. Plenty of sugar sand to spin through. No one else out in the desert. So unusual to not hear gunfire. I did see a pack of javelina and a hawk.

Took the fat bike out today. Started from the house and hit FINS to Lum Wash, out to the Gila River, rode some of the Cisco trails, out to Corgett Wash, Sunrise trail, Maricopa Trail back to FINS. Saw some hikers here and there. Saw a coyote on the pipeline road behind the houses on 185th Ave.

WOW! The missus was feeling pretty good today and wanted to get out for a walk and invited me to join! Headed down 186th Ave to the new part of Calistoga Drive counter-clockwise to Tecoma Road and returned the same way. Saw 2 bikers and a jogger. Beautiful morning walk.

Dan put together a great loop for the Harem (Dan, Carey, Christina, Yolanda) today on Sunrise Mountain in Peoria. We started from, what I'll call, Happy Valley Frontage Road, just north of Happy Valley and east of 92nd Ave. There's ample parking on the road and the trail access is signed at the end of the Cul-de-sac. We began our hike on Bat Cave trail to Saguaro Family Loop clockwise, Ridgeline east around the loop and back to Saguaro Family Loop west to Miner's Draw down to Miner's Ruin back to Bat Cave and Happy Valley. There were a few cars at the trailhead when we arrived at 8am and a different batch we when finished at 10:30. Fair amount of hikers on the top and 3 mountain bikers.

After two days of pickleball, it was time to get out on the bike! Rain was nice enough to hold off long enough for me to slip in a short ride on some of the difficult North Pirate UP trails. Starting from Safeway parking lot, crossing Estrella Parkway, on to What UP, down Coyote, Pirate's Cove, 1 UP, Pirate's Cove, Scallywag, What UP, Giddy UP, Saddle UP, Beam Me UP, Saddle UP down to Estrella Parkway, through the recently cleared tunnel, Tunnel Trail, Cottontail to the Estrella/Cotton Lane roundabout, and back to the parking lot. Had the trails to myself! I didn't get rained on until I got to the RV show at Sloan Stadium :)

Took the fat bike for a ride around Brown's Ranch trails this morning. I really wanted to ride Cow Poke and Soapberry Wash, so I just wandered my over to those and then back to where I started. Accidentally found myself at Balance Rock, which made for a great photo op, and then later at Cathedral Rock. Good balance of hikers and bikers and even some horse riders. All the trails at MSPN are pretty awesome, Cow Poke didn't disappoint and Soapberry Wash was just what the doctor ordered for a fat bike ride. Heavy cloud cover had me a little nervous about the possibility of rain, but I remained dry for the ride.

First hike of 2026 with the Harem (Dan, Carey, Christina) this morning at White Tank Regional Park. Simple loop from the Waddell parking lot, Mesquite, Ford, Willow, Mesquite trails. Lots of cars in the parking lot when we got there at 8am. Had more hiker encounters on the way back down Mesquite than on the way up. Saw two mountain bikers. Typical warm in the sun, cold in the shade, and plenty of both on this loop.

After a couple of rainy days, I took the fatty out on some sandy trails starting from Estrella Foothills Community Park south on Sunrise trail, continuing south on the powerline 2 track to the Fenceline trail up to the EMRP Iron Ranger entry point, Crossover to Pedersen, counter clockwise around to Homestead, back to Pedersen, Crossover, and the shortcut 2 track back to the Community Park. The sun was warm for the short amount of time it was out, cloud cover was perfect! Had the trails all to myself today.

I was poking around on Gaia Topo maps and spied a feature called Gillespie Volcano. Well, that sounds like a fat bike adventure ride to me! Started south of Agua Caliente Road and Historic Route 80 at the Gila Compressor Station Airport, which was at one time a cleared strip of desert, not so much anymore. Followed the gas line road south to Gillespie Dam, climbed up the bluff on the west side of the Gila River for some great views down to the dam and the bridge. My map indicated petroglyphs in that area, but I found lots of graffiti covering the rocks. From the dam I traveled south for just a bit on Enterprise Road and then west bound under the powerlines for 3/4 mile to a fence line, then southwest along the fence line for 2.5 miles on a two track "road" that doesn't see much activity. The Gillespie Volcano was to my north along this section, but not really much to see. There was a stealthy gate in the fence that lead to a faint 2 track to the northwest. After another 2.5 miles I popped out at Poison Well and followed a sandy 2 track for 2 miles to Agua Caliente Road about 1/2 mile from my truck. The only people I encountered on the loop was a couple camping at Poison Well whose two dogs ran down the road to greet me. Luckily they were friendly (the dogs) and the campers too. There was a big group of UTV'ers RV camping just off Agua Caliente Road. So happy with the fat tire bike for doing exploration out in the desert. Floats on the sand and soaks up the rocks.

Got home from 2 hours of pickleball this morning and thought, damn it's a great day to go for a bike ride! Screwed around on FINS trails for a bit then Maricopa/Sunrise trail over to the Estrella Foothills Community Park, Park Ave out to the EMRP Iron Ranger, Fenceline/GNODS Connector to GNODS, did some loops then rode through the neighborhoods back home. Saw 3 bikers and a whole bunch of hikers out on the trails. Merry Christmas!

Busy day today but managed to squeeze in a quick bike ride up to see the Christmas tree in FINS. Lots of hikers on the trails. Stopped to chat with a bunch of young lads on top of North Star trail at the Christmas Tree. One of the 3rd graders said I was a "chill old dude".

Did some Rainbow Valley exploring this morning on the fat bike. I've been plotting and planning a visit to Flying A Ranch airstrip (historical) for at least 2 years. Parked the truck off Riggs Road just east of Bullard Ave. Headed east on Riggs for about 2 miles to an unnamed 2 track ranch road that leads southeast past some cattle pens, water tanks, and well pumps out to what would be Avondale Ave, then south for 1 mile, east to Flying A Ranch airstrip, down runway 12 where I had the pleasure of being buzzed by a 2008 Aviat Husky, so cool! Exited the end of the runway and headed east to 99th Ave, north then east to the powerline road, north past Quartz Peak access road to another Wilderness access road east for a mile or so through a rickety old barbed wire gate, after which the road just ended. I was expecting to see some old ranch foundations or something, but there was nothing, just cactus and brittlebrush, rocks and sand. Turned around and returned to the Powerline Road and then caught Empire Blvd west back to the big cattle pen, northwest to Riggs Road and back to the truck. Apart from the Husky, I crossed paths with two adventure motorcycle riders on the Sierra Estrella Wilderness powerline road.

Met up with my PA/AZ bestie Tricia for a short hike from Apache Wash Trailhead. We did a counter clockwise loop on Sidewinder, Apache Vista spur, Apache Wash Loop, and Ocotillo trail back to the parking lot. No shortage of other hikers and bikers out on the trails on this beautiful morning. So good to see Tricia getting back out on the trails again.

Lunch ride today at EMRP. Started on Horseshoe out to Rainbow Valley counter clockwise to Toothaker, Gadsden, Butterfield back to Horseshoe and the parking lot. Saw two other bikers on Rainbow Valley traveling opposite my direction. The Rainbow Valley trailhead parking lot has been repaved and looks beautiful. New RV park is coming along. Rainbow Valley and Toothaker climbs are in rough shape. Gadsden is collecting sand west of Butterfield.
