Great hike and views memorializing those brave souls who lost their lives in the line of duty. Wasn't expecting that there would be a Arizona State Park Ranger at the trailhead providing information about the fire and the history of the surrounding area.

Started from the Aspen Creek trailhead at 7:30am and 36 degrees. Found signs warning of a mountain bike race, luckily for the next day. Headed south on Aspen Creek trail to East Copper trail. Took Copper up to Mount Francis road to the top of the mountain. Followed a jeep road north from the summit back to Aspen Creek trail for a short walk back to the trailhead. Saw a bunch of mountain bikes out enjoying the day and some hikers with a lack of a plan and destination looking for the communication towers. Lots of Oak Apples (galls) on Aspen Creek trail. Nice tarantula on East Copper trail.

Started at Estrella Foothills park and worked my way north keeping an eye on the topo in an attempt to stay off the steep trails. I was mostly successful. Good times.

Hoped we timed the changing Aspens right and headed up for an Inner Basin hike this morning. Plenty of parking still available at 7am, but suspect not for long. Lots of big groups and a 50K run going on today. We hiked up to Weatherford and just a bit beyond to get over 11k feet. Aspens partially green and gold, and beautiful.

First ride on my new Trek Roscoe 7. Been waiting for the rain to stop all week (I'm a fair weather rider). Did the perimeter of FINS today. The Stache I rented Monday definitely rolled over the rocks better and seemed a little easier to climb, but it's double the price of the Roscoe and I'm not that committed :)

First of two hikes today. Got to the trailhead at 6:45am with plenty of parking to spare. Went over to the kiosk to purchase a pass, and to my surprise, it said Happy Holiday, no fee today. I don't know what holiday it was, but hurrah!

I find it ironic that this "Wilderness" area butts right up to the resort. Anyway, focus, we visited two sets of ruins on the east side of the trail. Some of the trail is a bit overgrown and washed out, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Heading back to the parking lot, Gallydoll observed a heck of a lot of vortex groupies up on the Vista Trail. We made haste to get out of there and head over to Loy.

Second hike of the day after Boynton. Two cars already at the parking spot. Nice and quite. Fast walking to get to the cliff dwellings cut off. We could hear voices of a group already up at the ruins. We got up and made some intros, scouted around, and enjoyed the view. Did some additional exploring to find the route up to the higher levels. We were hungry so we decided to leave going all the way for the next visit. Headed into Cottonwood for some burgers and milk shakes at Bings!

Rented a Trek Stache from the folks at Copper State Bike and Hike at the Estrella Lucero vistor center yesterday. So glad the storms went east this morning so I could get out for a ride. I haven't ridden for a LONG time, but was surprised how quickly it all came back to me. I realized that I do like flat and smooth trails over the steep, rocky climbs and descents, I'll keep those for hiking!

I've been doing a lot of hiking on the Fantasy Island North Singletrack mountain bike trails across the street from my new home in Estrella that has given me the itch to get another mountain bike. But, the FINS trails are kind of steep and rocky, which isn't really my vibe on a mountain bike ( = injury ). So, after plenty of googling and time on HAZ Maps, I came across this loop. There's just miles and miles of mountain bike trails (which to me, means easy grades) east of Estrella Parkway. I actually drove over to Foothills Community park just before 6am to start my hike this morning. Exited the parking area to the east behind the school and followed the powerline jeep trail north across Corgett wash to the start of the single track. A lot of flat miles followed by some easy grades climbing into the foothills made for a delightfully breezy morning with the foothills providing some shade from the rising Sun. There are occasional carbonite signs with cryptographic trail markings, which now make a whole lot of sense after picking up a trail map from the bike shop and coffee bar at Cafe Lucero once I finished the hike. I enjoyed the trails so much that I bought a mountain bike this afternoon from the Trek shop at I-10 and Litchfield. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a garage trophy, or cut too deep into my hiking miles.

We got run off the mountain early by thunderstorms last year when we did this hike. Much better luck this time around. Left Phoenix at 5AM and got to the quickly filling trailhead at 7am. Lots of groups heading for the summit. We had the crash site all to ourselves for the duration of our visit. Scrambled to the top of the debris field to check out the landing gear and motor. It was slow going across the scree field. Storms rolled in as we were heading back into Flagstaff for some post hike treats.

Drove up to Flagstaff to beat the heat and took it one step further and dropped into the cool Lava River Cave. Had the full harem and Mark from Pine. Got there early and found a sign that the LRC was closed for parking lot construction. There was a Forest Ranger at the trail head and, luckily, told us only half the parking lot was closed and the cave was opened. Only one other car in the lot when we arrived. Pretty much had the cave to ourselves on the way in. Passed a steady line of people on the way out. So disappointed to find toilet paper and graffiti deep into the cave :( Took the big camera, flash, and tripod for some great pictures.

Stayed on the south east side this morning. With a trip up to Northstar, the Enchanted Forest, and finished the hike off exploring the piles of clean fill located along the future path of Callistoga Drive. Saw 5 mountain bikers and no other hikers on the trail this morning.

Another morning out mapping the FINS system. Starting to run out of new trails, but there are more to go! Hit the north side this morning and took a side trip up the hill east of the pipeline.

Made the 411 mile round trip from Goodyear to explore the spires and pinnacles of Red Mountain. New hiking friend Mark from Pine joined the regular Harem crew and was certainly an asset to have along for today's climbing adventure. Beautiful views of the mountain as you approach from the trailhead. We took the "gate" option on the way in and the ladder route on the way out. We had a great deal of fun exploring the slot canyons. There was a lot of butt hiking going on slipping and sliding our way back down from the higher reaches. Had a fantastic time!

83 degrees and 20% RH. Longish route for a weekday hike. Took the power line road to Connie's Causeway to Rita's Upper Bypass to Randy's Ridge and Mark's Meander. Mapped some new trails, Grunt and unnamed trail south of Kylie's Krossing. Connected by on Bryan's Brink around Bacca's Butte. Took the unmapped trail up Dead Digit Draw and Shooting Star up to the high point. Returned via Northstar, Jim's Star pass, Chris' Chaos, Proposal Pass, down to Keyhole and out. Really feeling great this morning! I have almost all of the area mapped.
