Since there was not enough water flowing at Barnhart... we decided to venture over to Horton Springs. We hiked the creek most of the way up and back. It was a great day for hiking in this shady forest. Doggies loved the trail.

Decided to travel back up to Barnhart to check out the falls. I was nervous to try the bushwacking area with my dog the first time, so I did not get close to the falls. I was hoping for a good water flow due to recent snow storms. When I first arrived on the trail, I noticed the water inlet on the left was bone dry. Uh oh... Needless to say, most of the snow had already melted. The falls were still worth the trip, but one day... I will see them in full force!

I forgot how unbelievably challenging this hike can be. I started from the parking lot around 11:30am. I flew through the Cave Creek wash area in about :45min. Once I started on Cottonwood trail, I suddenly remembered the rolling staircase stairclimber of a ride that this trail takes you on before finally dumping you out at the Skull Mesa trailhead. Well I made this 2.7 miles of ups and downs in a little over an hour. So now for the approx 1000ft ascent onto the mesa that is called Skull. The rocks here are extremely loose... so be very careful when hiking alone... helicopter rescue only territory. Once I tackled the switchbacks, I landed on the flat mesa. Walking through the brush you can easily find the cairns. I did not have the extrordinary details provided by the author of this hike to find the ruins but I did some exploring to the northeast and parts of the west. After a brief break on the southern facing rim, I headed back for the truck.

Great first time hike from the Cross F Trailhead. This little Saddle trail as they are calling it runs by Sycamore creek and was very enjoyable. Since we are experiencing snowy weather this weekend I was able to make the hike in almost a foot of snow of the saddle. Very nice solitude today.

I've driven past the Ballentine trailhead many times and was afraid the scenery would be stark. I've recently read up on the overall trail and decided to take a peak. It was getting ready to storm, so we only ventured around the Pine Creek Loop. There were some pretty amazing views and not bad on solitude. I hiked from the North end around to the intersection with Ballantine trail and hiked the South route heading back to parking. This is not a good hike for a dog... lots of cactus!

This was my first real attempt at Horton Springs. I brought the dog so I was not planning on making it completely to the springs. There was more solitude on this hike than expected. I maybe saw 5 other people on a weekend afternoon. The trail was hard to follow as many side trails take you off to the creek. I will need to read up on this area before I try again. Overall, the smell of all the various forest pine and the cool water on the feet made the trip an A+.

This was a fun hike! I only noticed one parking spot and was lucky to snag it. The initial ascent up Sterling Pass will wind those looking for a leisurely stroll. The dog loved the snow which made for an interesting climate change from below. Everyone loves the rock colors of Oak Creek Canyon but this particular hike really gives you the solitude to enjoy them. Since it started dumping the snow, we were unable to make it the full 5 miles roundtrip to Vultee Arch.

What a great hike! This was my first time hiking Boulder Creek. The trail itself meets up with the Second Water trail of the Superstitions. If you venture off the Boulder Creek trail prior to this meetup, you will hike La Barge Canyon. The initial ascent up Boulder Creek is staggering but with phenomenal views. Descending down into the variety of options you find yourself at a wash. Hopping the boulders toward the pyramid shaped wall of stone should find you a nice adventure. Make sure to tell a friend if you will be alone.. those boulders can reach out and grab you!

Great little hike to cool off from a drive south on the I-17 before getting back to town. I stumbled onto this while trying to avoid rush out traffic back to Phoenix. The trail is actually fairly popular with the locals. You can see many trucks parked off on side roads. The trail is short unless you continue boulder hopping. There are some petroglyphs to view on the wall when you first see water. It's been extremely windy in this canyon during both of my visits. Today... I got to enjoy a calm before a storm feeling.

Okay so the original plan was to go to Massacre Grounds. The map that I had showed a "target shooting sign" side road of the main First Water trailhead. I drove this road up and down several times and never found a driveable off road... so what did we do... we hiked from Jacob's Crosscut out into the middle of nowhere... that's what. After pulling the prickly cactus from our kneecaps... we decided to take a leisurely stroll up First Water. We made it halfway and turned around. One day we will complete the actual Massacre Falls loop.

Great hike around the lake. This is the best lake hike I've seen thus far. It is quite a lengthy hike when considering the lack of shade. Choose your time to go wisely. Also, this is not a dog friendly hike. I had to pick cholla needles out twice and would not recommend taking a dog out through some of this brush. Stella views and low elevation change make this a great first time hike.

Amazing hike in the Spur Cross recreational area. You need to be prepared before this hike! It is lengthy and snacks are recommended. I went early on the day after Christmas so not much traffic. The normal Cave Creek wash area was pleasant. I had a tough time locating the Cottonwood trail as the sign does not make it clear that you are to climb the ridge on the right to get to the trail. After this confusion, the remaining trail is well marked (with a quick stich through some grasslands - watch for cairns). I was alone, so I didn't hang on the mesa for too long with all the paw prints about.

Another first hike here too see the amazing Barnhardt Trail. It was cold/snowy weather, so an easy ascent up the 1912 feet. I stopped after the waterfall instead of hiking up into the rim of the Mazatzals (I hear it gets pretty tricky to find the trail at the top... even without snow cover). There was a look-out point about halfway up. The amazing part was that I started trecking backward down the trail without even realizing it... Thank goodness for dog paw prints to wake me up!

Looking for a nice quiet stroll just outside of Oak Creek Canyon... well this is it. I was mostly stopping for a bite to eat but that I would check out the area. When you first start the loop and go south (right), you notice many a tree along your path. As you go to the perimeter of the ridge, you see some great views down to the wash below (a slight detour here has its rewards). Once back on the loop, enjoy more pine and flowing pastures. Very nice stroll through the woods. A++ for dogs.

First time taking a stroll up Bobbies Rock. I noticed a few hikers heading up a slight etching in a wall of stone about halfway across the trail from the intersection with Echo Canyon Trail. There is amazing solitude in this section of Camelback. There are only a few other spots to have some peace on the popular mountain. This is one of them.

This is an amazing hike and very popular. I started the ascent late day after several local Superstitions hikes. I didn't make it all the way to the top of flat iron this trip. Good advice to wear strong boots or shows with traction. The rocks get very slippery heading up the Siphon Draw trail to the top of Flat Iron! Not for doggies....

I'm glad I had not run out of steam to press on to Siphone Draw after a disappointing Hierogylphics Canyon and Treasure Loop trail. I think I was paying too much attention to the "introductory" phrasing when looking into my first Superstition hikes. This is an enjoyable quick hike if you live in the area... but if traveling from far... I suggest this as an anecdote to an otherwise jam-packed day full of serious hiking!

This was hiked as my introduction to the Superstition Mountains. A very brief jut up through a canyon to find many petroglyphs and pools of standing water (ah the bees!). I'm not sure which I saw more of, small children or sharp shrubbery. Very quick in-n-out for this hike. On to Flat Iron!

I went on this trek looking for petroglyphs. The day I decided to go there was about 100-150 ARMY trainees walking/running the trail. This made for an interesting hike at best. On the ascent, you grab the edge of the walled ridges about halfway up from parking level. The decent climb will wind you but not burn out the legs. This trail ends in an abrupt and disappointing flat top near a road. I found a side trail on the way back that led me to a photo opp. I actually ran the return trip with the ARMY to make my rapid exit.

Buffalo Ridge is a solid clump of dirt along the 101 near Cave Creek. On one side is a freeway and the other side... a disc golf course. In between, you get a few miles of hiking with good views from the basic dead center of north Phoenix. There do not appear to be any official routes to these ridges, but well worn paths are certainly etched out. Make sure to be respectful of private property and beware the disc golfers below!
