First time hiking around Apache Lake after years of road closures. Beautiful flowers from spring rain. Very very windy spring day, so I only hiked in short 3 miles to get to ridge line to view east. I look forward to a future return trip someday to make it to the waterfall or Reavis Ranch.

I hiked up from road AZ 88. It is about 3 miles from this trailhead. If one has a true 4 wheel drive with very high clearance it is possible to drive the first 3 miles. However, after hiking in this road, I found a man whose 4 wheel drive had given up. This was a fairly remote area to be driving alone. Be careful out there folks!

I then started up Peter's Tail for my first time. I have visited here before but didn't go down this trail. Today I hike up about 0.6 miles. The trail is sometime in the creek and sometime next to the creek. Watch very carefully for cairns. The trail was recently clean from over growth. The Cat's Claw brush was pleasantly cut back in many sections.

I explored as I intend to through hike one day from here to Whiskey Creek or to First Water.

Great Easter hike in the rain left this highly visited trail unusually unattended and enjoyable. There were a few waterfalls dripping and the trail was running with muddy water that looked like running milk chocolate. Yum!

This was my first hike in the snow in the desert. As I drove the road to the Peralta Trailhead, I could see snow at the higher elevations and peaks of the Superstition Mountains. As I started at sunrise is was raining but it never snowed, so the snow was from overnight. The rain and snow held off many hikers so I had the trail to myself for several hours. This was the first time I was on Freemont Saddle all by myself. Usually the saddle is very busy for the views and photos. Weaver's Needle was fogged in, so I took a picture of the fog just for fun. I stomped out "HI" in the snow at Freemont Saddle just to elate the kid in me. There was about 2 inches of snow at the saddle, but it was melting very quickly, even in the hour that I stayed to wait for the fog to clear, which it did not.

So much recent rain made the entire trail more like a stream. The water was clear and cold.

Snow in the desert is very special and enjoyable.

It was a beautiful early spring day with recent January rains making all the creeks run. There was plenty of wonderful water rippling with splendor and many puddles to jump in during the hike. The spring wildflowers are coming soon. :y:

I went clockwise around Miner's Needle Loop. I also added a few offshoots for exploration for future trips. At Bluff Springs, I headed north on Dutchman's trail to see to the north for a future through high on the full Dutchman.

I also hiked east on the Whiskey Springs leg. The Forest Rangers stationed at the Peralta Trailhead this morning warned against hiking the Whiskey Springs trail since it is "no longer being actively maintained". However, I was not deterred and I explored about 1.5 miles along the trail to the east, where there is an amazing campsite at a saddle before the final leg of the trail winds down to Whiskey Springs itself. The views from the saddle are stunning with magnificent views to the west and the east at the same time from the saddle. Upon returning to the trailhead, I advised the Forest Rangers that the trail isn't bad and that they need not discourage hiking on the trail.

First time approaching Hackberry Springs from Needle Vista on highway 88. This hike walks up a creek bed. This area is often more trafficked by horseback riders.

I prefer the the Hackberry Springs and Garden Valley loop accessible from the First Water trailhead.

Great sunrise hike on early January Friday with morning temp at 35F at 7:30AM. Almost no one on the trail. This is almost no water in the area.

Driest I've ever seen hackberry Springs. A few sitting pools with very little water. No running water.

This was the second day of my overnight backpacking trip. I backpacked this solo. This was my first solo backpack and my first overnight in the Superstition Wilderness. It took me two hours to hike out 4 1/2 miles.

This was my first day of an overnight backpacking trip. I started the first water trailhead I hiked on Second Water Trail. I went upstream on Boulder Canyon and then I camped in the valley where the Dutchman Trail intersect the Black Mesa Trail. I hiked out the next day in a separate track.

There was very little water this entire trip.

I hiked in a clockwise direction and upstream on Boulder Canyon. Encountered a hiker coming downstream, Boulder Canyon, who said last year it was nearly impossible with much water and overgrowth. He said this year it was much better and easily hiked.

At 2.88 miles hiking in from the tailhead, I couldn’t get through the end of the trail because there was a big pond. It’s about 2 to 3 feet deep water in a narrow portion of the canyon. Just before that, there was a large thick of tall grass. It’s hard to get through the grass. The way through is actually around it against the canyon wall on the east.

This trail isn't a trail, but a hike through a rocky creek bed. It is a great challenge in remote country with no one around.
