At long last... Cactus to Clouds. I have known about this hike for roughly four years and have been considering it more seriously in the last two. My long time hiking partner and I decided that May 17th was going to be the day. We tend to plan chaotic hiking trips. The only other time I have been to California was last year to climb Mt. Whitney. Drove a rental car in on August 11th. Started hiking at 1 AM on August 12th. Finished around 1 PM and made it back home that same night. This trip was similar. Drove in Thursday night. Pretended to sleep. Got about one hour. Alarm went off at 2:30 AM. On the trail by 3:30 AM. Finished around 4:30 PM. Back home in Phoenix by 10 PM.

To start off, the Skyline trail/route is very well maintained. The white dots are well placed and following them along with a GPS route made for casual route finding. Looking down at Palm Springs all lit up while you gain elevation is great. Almost feels like you are looking out of an airplane. The sun rose about half way up our ascent to the ranger station. The middle zone was unlike anything I have hiked before. Lots of plants I have never seen. I thought I was looking at weird Century plants for a while, but they are apparently called "Parry's Beargrass". At a certain elevation range these things are everywhere. The bees love them. Several miles of this hike were packed with bees. Every once in a while on the ascent you get a peak down a different canyon. The mountain is so large it is hard to put it in perspective.

I used to eat very little on hikes and when I kicked that habit I saw my performance skyrocket. If you don't eat constantly on this one you will suffer. Cliff Blocks, Tailwind, Bagels, Goos, whatever you can get down. Once you hit the first tree line (before the tram) it gets a bit steeper but it really wasn't anything crazy. I was expecting something else from the videos I watched. Sometimes hiking videos sensationalize aspects of trips for clicks to such a level that it distorts what it actually feels like to hike them. We topped out by the first Ranger Station/tram area in a little over six hours.

I refilled my Camelback at the Ranger Station. Probably drank 2 L on the way up out of my 3L. The water at the Ranger Station was out of a hose in the back. It had some sort of warning about drinking the water routinely. You know how California is with the Cancer warnings. I guess if I grow another hand or something I will know where it came from.

In the weeks leading up to this hike the biggest concern was the snow. There was a lot of snow after the Ranger Station. The first mile or so wasn't bad but it slowed us down in the next five. At certain points there were snow paths leading to nowhere and the "correct" snow path didn't always follow the GPS route. It was the kind of snow that makes people have trust issues. Sometimes you are on firm ground, other times you are post holing. The miles to the peak once the snow was a factor were slower going. Once we got above the second tree line the area opens up and you can start to get a sense of the range.

The peak was packed with snow. There were minimal clouds (slightly disappointing) but the views were still fantastic. Made peak at the 10 hour mark. Lots to look at to the West. Many peaks in the distance that I am unfamiliar with. Another 3 hours back, and we were at the Tram. We walked in the visitor center as victors and boarded a Tram full of people who smelled a lot better than we did. Wasn't expecting the party vibes on the Tram. A couple of Sweet Carolines and we were down at the tram station parking lot.

I play mind games with myself on long hikes. For example, the miles back never count in my head. It could be five it could be ten. Doesn't matter. They don't count. Planning for this one I didn't think much about the miles after the Ranger Station because I was so concerned about that desert ascent. The last six miles to the peak actually felt longer.

Great day. Took all of 24 hours for me to think about doing it again but faster.

Watch said 19.74 miles and 10,413 ft of gain. Probably the last big route I do with the Garmin Instinct Solar.

A couple years ago me and a buddy of mine tried to get out to Madera Peak and ended up not making it to the trailhead. The road looked crazy and we turned around. An important note on this one. Follow the guide posted driving instructions closely. If you see a road going up the mountain and just try it on a whim you may regret it. If you take directions from Google you will regret it. Miami is basically a labyrinth of bad roads. Choose wisely.

I parked the truck where there was some space. I didn't see any signs. The hike itself follows a road the majority of the time and is quite steep. It gets steeper near the top by the tower. From there it is just a little push to the actual peak. This is a stout little hike if you want to be among the trees and not drive too far out of Phoenix.

I got behind on uploading and am just getting around to this trip. First time in Florida Canyon and second time in the Santa Rita Mountains. The first mile or so of this trail was full of wildflowers of all colors.

The trail is in decent shape until you reach the sign that says .7 miles to Armour Spring. It isn't bad but the whole area around Armour Spring and the push up to McCleary Peak is less obvious and the closer to the peak you get the more overgrown it gets. The Armour Spring area had water running and a bit of snow still. The snow melt seems to get the best of the mountain side and the whole trail kind of slides or droops down.

McCleary Peak is interesting. To the South you can see Wrightson poking out behind Crest Trail and the rest of the Range lays itself out to the Southwest. The top of the peak reminded me a bit of Mazatzal Peak. I was solo on this one and took my time. Only saw one other hiker out of Florida Canyon.

This was a bit of a last minute decision hike. Decided to do this one while I was at Pima Canyon (South Mountain) on Friday night.

I have been up Kimball twice from the other trailhead and never started out of Tucson's Pima Canyon. I read good things about the canyon walls. They are all true. The canyon is impressive. I am sure there are nice waterfalls during a heavy rain. Flowers were blooming, water was running, it was a treat.

I think the best views were right after the Pima Saddle turn off point. Looking back at the jagged range was a nice view. Kimball was nice too. Looks like Lemmon still has snow. Window Peak and Cathedral brought back some good trip memories.

Trail is in great shape. Ran most of the way down. Made good time without poles.

Watch stats were a bit different on elevation. I use the Garmin Solar Instinct Solar 2 and I have been having random shut offs. Glad I didn't have any today.

Spontaneous trip. Accepted this hike on about 30 minutes notice. Packed the gear, picked up my crazy friend who proposed it and drove the 2 hours from Mesa.

The road to the actual trailhead is not appropriate for a sedan. You would regret your decision if you gave it the good old college try. 2WD High Clearance truck easily provided access. Started hiking at around 3:30 PM.

Only saw one person on the trail. At about a mile in, we ran into a gruff older man on a horse that was accompanied by a German Shepard. The only words he uttered were to express concern about our decision to start so late. I explained our gameplan and made a gesture towards my vest containing a headlamp. He was not impressed.

Regardless, we made good time up the mountain. This trail design is great. A straight start out of the trailhead running parallel to a dry creek bed hits the mountain and then forms a tilted "Z" shape up to a saddle and eventually to the peak itself. The views of the valley and the enormous rocks suspended on the side of the mountain are scenic and fun to be around. There are some big rocks here and I would bet during a heavy rain you get a bunch of little waterfalls that would pop up.

The saddle is where you get your first view of the 4x4 road to the top. The top itself is cool and different. Big empty parking areas, primitive helicopter pad, a bench or two, a house-like structure, and a GIANT array of solar panels. The sun was getting ready to set so Maricopa County to the East was getting hit with those delightfully orange evening rays of light. You could see all the way to Four Peaks.

Sun set on the trip down. Probably 2 miles in. It got very dark (as expected). Headlamps were used. It wasn't until mile 3 of the down trip that we started noticing differences in light on the surrounding hilltops. All of a sudden, the moon rose over the mountainside from the East and illuminated the valley in front of us. Some areas were still completely dark, others were so well lit that they were traversable without artificial light of any kind. I have never hiked under a full moon like this so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Overall trip took 4.5 hours. Really enjoyed this area. 8th County HP crossed off the list.

Easy parking. Nice, maintained trail. The area was nice but perhaps a little underwhelming? Three wild burros spotted near the end.

Loop that was made up on the spot. City of Phoenix blocked a path that connects Beverly Canyon and Ridgeline Trail. Don't know why. Been using it for years. Almost got run over by some bikers where Mormon forks to Fat Man's Pass. Good loop anyway!

Last minute decision to get weekly stats where they needed to be. The original plan was a short trip up to Thompson and back. I ended up deciding to hit 3702 on the way up. The clouds yesterday were spectacular. Getting overcast hiking days is a treat. Ran into one runner near the top of Thompson. Saw a few people in the lower areas before the incredibly steep road. Always wondered if anyone has measured how steep that road is. I can't imagine driving a vehicle up (or down) that.

Wonderful day outside.

Not really sure what to call this one. Settled on "Trans Goldfield Alternate". The original Trans Goldfield hike has been on the radar for a couple years. A few weeks ago, my hiking buddy suggested an alternate route going from N>S or S>N instead of W>E. I scouted Rhyodacite last week and this was the day to test it out. This route hits Dome, Panorama Peak, Peak 3076, and Rhyodacite Canyon.

The path up to Dome was surprisingly faint considering it is the high point. The way up wasn't bad and the eastern facing rock walls lit up in that classic gold color in the morning light. After signing the summit register we hopped down to the tanks and wrapped around some larger walls to start the trip over to Panorama. The way out to Panorama was less difficult than expected.

On the eastern side of Panorama we found a set of "2024" Balloons trapped in some brush. If you have ever wondered where balloons end up when you let them go into the sky, the answer is the Tonto National Forest. I am pretty much a balloon collector at this point. The 2024 balloons finally met their end at the hands of my trekking polls. I packed them up and we continued to Peak 3076.

Up until this point, we used gps routes posted on this site. I used the official route for Dome Mountain Loop and once on top of that I switched to DixieFlyer's alternate route that included Panorama Peak (thank you). With no route to go on, I switched over to a few screengrabs I had taken in Google Earth 3D. Minimally bushwacky, very doable. It took just under 4.5 hours to hit Peak 3076 from Wolverine Gate. The original plan was to backtrack a bit and use a ridge to go down and connect with the original Trans Goldfield route. Instead of doing that, we took a more direct route. It was steeper but manageable.

Things didn't slow down until we connected with the original route. From mile 6.5 - 7 it was snails pace. Lots of catclaw. Very overgrown. In this section there are some very interesting overhangs or caves or whatever you would like to call them. After that little slog, it was back through Rhyodacite (where I was the week before), out and around the bald eagle stuff and back to the car.

These miniature thru hikes are a good challenge. I think the only two left in the Phoenix metro area to knock off are the White Tanks (eh) and the Sierra Estrella ridgeline. Trips like this never go how you think they are going to go. Connecting the peaks on this one ended up being the easiest part.

Cool trip. Lots more to do in the Goldfields.

Scouting this for a potential off-trail extravaganza next weekend. I had never been to Rhyodacite and wanted to see if it was going to be a time consuming rock hop.

Jogged most of this one. I didn't want to be in the beer can poop filled dry swamp any longer than necessary. Followed the Trans Goldfield route out until it got to the closure and skirted it just west.

Rhyodacite Canyon is gnarly looking. I made excellent time through and then did it in reverse. The lighting was much better on the reverse so I took photos, checked out a cave I skipped on the way in, and climbed up out of the canyon in several spots. Took a long snack break and appreciated it all. Then back out the way I came.

I am wondering how bad of a trip it would be to go north > south through Rhyodacite canyon, off-off-trail it for a while and hit Dome from the north. Might find out here soon.

Wonderful morning.

Peak 3845 has caught my eye a few times over the past couple of months so I decided to see how accessible it is. Turns out it is very accessible. This is a quick turn off on the Balanced Rock to 5057 use trail.

I picked a friendly looking scramble on the left side of the rock cluster and grabbed the peak that way. Not really any exposure here. Not any difficult scrambling. From here you have a top down view of Chuparosa canyon and west side spire. Across is 3915 and all the way up is 5057. Fantastic views that direction. I went down as far as I could southwest and looked down on the Hiero Trail.

On my way back I went down and checked out the top of Chuparosa from a few different angles. I spotted what looks like a rock wall on the upper part of the canyon? I have a photo in the photoset with a red marker designating it. It could just be a pile of rocks but it looked a bit off. I still haven't been all the way down or all the way up Chuparosa to connect it all. There is one spot I am not crazy about. Eventually it will get done.

After all that, I retraced some steps and wandered a bit. On the way down I met a couple of hikers checking out Balanced Rock. They were headed to 5057. Didn't see anyone else until I hit Hiero again.

Great day.

Don't typically post South Mountain hikes/runs. This is a nice little workout hike when crunched for time.

Up Marcos De Niza, down under the power lines and up what the map calls "Scott Ridge Trail". Just up to the hilltop and then repeat the process backwards (past the power lines, back up and over Marcos De Niza) to the car. A potent little trip out of Pima Canyon parking lot.

Small break on the big hilltop to reset heart rate and soak in those mediocre South Mountain views.

The original plan was to do Miners Needle Loop. This sort of just happened. Ventured up to the top of the rock cluster for Miners Needle. Very easy trip. Headed back down and off-trailed down to a creek bed that feeds back into Dutchman's 104. Found a Geological Survey stake during the off-trail section. Don't know why it was there. Overcast. Excellent weather.

Peak 4102 has been on the list for a while. Finally got around to it. This is a really nice area. Started early. Crowds were better than expected on Siphon Draw. Actually had a moment in the bathtub with no people. First time for me on Siphon Draw. This hike really starts when you get out of the bathtub. You take a left up a canyon instead of continuing the journey up to Flatiron. There is a use trail that is some what easy to follow all the way up (I would assume that is because of the BASE jumpers). Lots of catclaw. Pants are a wise choice. I hit the saddle and headed NW. Peak 4102 was just getting hit with the first rays of morning sun.

This area splays out like five fingers. All five fingers have that yellow/green rock I am fond of. Peak 4102 is obviously the tallest. It is the ring finger. I bagged it and backtracked down. Lost my hat. Went back up. Didn't find it. Considered it lost. Trekked on to the pinky finger. On the way to the pinky there is an oval shaped cave of sorts. If you keep going out to the end of the pinky you see the biggest outcropping of yellow/green rock. If you move a bit more to the north you can visit the diving board the BASE jumpers use. I ventured out to the front of the board but didn't dare to get on the end. I am not squeamish with heights but it was practically a wind tunnel and I decided not to risk my life for a photo. Looking back East you can see a slot between the rocks with a few trees yellow in color.

At this point you pretty much have to back track around to the palm of the hand. I visited the cave on the way back. I found my hat. Then I trekked on to the pointer finger and the middle finger. Unfortunately the thumb is inaccessible (or at least well beyond my skill level). Wonderful area with little sign of human activity and lots of mountain goat poop.

Back down the canyon. Loose rock and a bit steep. Like going down Boulder Canyon when doing Superstition Ridgeline. Back on to Siphon Draw and out to the car.

Another puzzle piece of the eastern Superstitions checked off the list. Great way to spend a Saturday morning. Garmin Stats were wonky. Expect 9 miles and 3K gain or so.

No triplog that I could find on 4102. Next time i am there i will bring one.

Second Trip out to this location.

I enjoyed most of Hiero under the light of a headlamp. First one out on the trail. Continued passed the glyphs, and took the turn off for Balanced Rock. To my surprise, a noisy hawk was perched directly on top planning a meal. As I got close it descended down into the canyon. A wonderful sight. I continued up what is now a well cairned path used to hit 5057 from the Southeast and got my first look at 3915 for the day.

The area around 3915 is difficult to describe. There are other spots like it, but in this area the rocks set themselves apart from anything else in the area. They are different in shape, texture and color. They almost look like bread rising during the baking process. They also have that classic green/yellow neon color from the desert lichen growth. The area sits on the edge of a cliff with Chuparosa to the West and Ermahgerd to the East. On the way there I took the high route (see GPS route) that is closer to a large wall. As the wall begins to curve to the left you can see a very large Saguaro skeleton still standing tall. There is also a cave/overhang area to the left you can visit if you wish.

I descended down towards 3915, brushy and thorny but no real concerns. There is an open area just North of 3915 with a large cairn. You really have two choices at this point from my experience. You can favor left (East) or right (West). I ran it all the way out on the East to scope out some future trips. I stumbled across something I missed last time. On the Eastern edge, looking down into Ermahgerd canyon there is a sawtooth looking arch that must be 60 feet long. It is impressive but difficult to capture in a photo (bottom half of the feature photo). I progressed until i cliffed out, took a few shots of the canyon and headed back towards the center.

In my two trips I have found that you pretty much have to head back to the center in order to hit the Western edge. The dome shaped rocks look small from afar, but when you are close up you see how big the domes are. When you have two or three domes right next to each other the space between is very steep. These crevices between are filled with heavy brush and sometimes full trees. From the center I moved South again and visited the large circular arch from my last trip. I continued and went to the cut out on the edge of the cliff. I hung out at the cut out for a few minutes and enjoyed the views before heading back.

I took the low route on the way out after a little trip to a lower point on the West side. At times I thought the low route out was easier but I can't tell yet. Since I am really just wandering around at this point I am going to keep this as another triplog instead of a guide. Great little trip. Great place.

Using the generic stats for this. Had some GPS issues. This was a wild little trip. Left Phoenix with a rental car at around 6 AM on Friday (August 11th). Arrived in Lone Pine in the afternoon. Attempted to sleep from 6 PM to Midnight, probably got one hour of sleep. Got up at Midnight, hit the trail by a little after 1 AM.

The parking lot was quite busy. Right out of the car we talked to a man who was rattled by a bear sighting near the bear box. After we got a bit of space from the trailhead the night sky became visible. This was during the Perseid meteor shower. Didn't see anything insane but you could see a few meteors falling if you looked closely.

Hit Consultation lake around first light. Unbelievable views. Looked like Mordor. 99 switchbacks were in great condition. A few ice crossings that didn't require crampons. John Muir trail was beautiful, ridiculous views on both sides. There was enough ice/snow to require a straight forward/ easy scramble to the top.

Fortunately, we enjoyed clear 360 degree views on the peak for about 20 minutes. This really is a spectacular hike. The effort is worth the reward.

The trip back down was long but pleasant overall. The best part of the trip down is seeing everything you missed in the dark. Back in the parking lot around 1 PM.

Made a quick stop at the Mount Whitney Hostel for a shower and drove to Las Vegas. Boarded a plane and was in my own bed before midnight. Hell of a Saturday.

Day 5 of 5. Hit this peak before heading to the airport. Bierstadt was pretty slushy until you hit the final ridge. Lots of people on the trail. This is an easy 14er and seems like an good intro to the average person that wants to get high up.

Excellent trip. Looking forward to exploring more of Colorado.

Day 4 of 5. Favorite hike of the trip. Quandary Peak was delightful. The path to the peak is incredibly scenic, not as steep as Elbert, and wasn't as crowded. Being above the clouds is always nice, and on the way down we saw 9 mountain goats. The goats were very docile and slowly worked their way up the trail. We stood still and let the goats pass by. They didn't seem shy or bothered.
