Fit a quick trip up to the Grand Canyon to get some stats in and become more familiar with Bright Angel. I have been on this trail once before, several years ago. That trip involved a camping trip with zero sleep, and I was struggling on BA after descending down South Kaibab.

This trip began in Scottsdale at 2:30 AM. Started descending BA by 6:30 AM and we were back at the car by 12:45 PM. Water was on at Indian Gardens/Havasupai Gardens. The descent was enjoyable and the views were plentiful. Took about 20 minutes to hang out on the beach and then started the trip back out. Storm clouds came in but didn't turn into rain. Big clouds really make the landscape come alive. Climbing out took about 3.5 hours at a moderate pace. No struggle this time.

Looking to do rim to river to rim and Humphreys Peak sometime this year and might do BA instead of SK. I think its more enjoyable despite the extra distance.

Solid day trip.

First trip out of town in quite some time. Miller has been on the list for quite some time. Actually drove in from the west instead of coming in through Sierra Vista. The dirt/gravel road was in good shape. About 14 miles or so of that.

The trail for this is in great shape and the way it was built gradually takes you up and up and up. The first two miles puts you on top of a ridge and makes up the first 1k feet of gain. That two mile stretch is punctuated with caves that have been barred off and unfortunately a bit of trash. Not terrible but more than you would expect to see say in the Superstitions. It was interesting to be at that elevation and not see any trees for quite some time. There are spots with trees but they are few and far between.

The visibility wasn't fantastic on the peak, but it was still nice. The rest of the Huachuca range to your north, and Mexico to the south. The don wall is visible if you squint.

We ended up turning around on the descent in order to boost the elevation gain a bit.

I would like to come back to this range and start from the north, maybe pick up Carr and a few other points. Solid day out on the mountains.

I have been looking for a South Mountain workout route that would give me as much elevation as possible. I stumbled over Pseudalpine's "Crumpled Bikini-top" route a couple weeks back and thought it fit the bill. Thanks for the route.

[ Deep Search Results ]

I don't know of a better way to pick up 4K at South Mountain. Up Marcos De Niza, down San Gabriel Ridge, up Young Man, down Old Man, up Corona De Loma, etc..

Great day overall. Temps are still low enough to where you don't need a lot of water. Very few people outside of the Marcos De Niza sections. I tried to jog where possible.

I keep having discrepancies between my routes in Garmin Connect and Hike AZ. Garmin Connect shows 16.01 miles and 4806 total ascent. Not sure what is up with that. I might need to recalibrate my device.

Enjoyable day out of First Water. Ran the trail until Boulder Canyon and took it easy for the rest of the day. Parking lots were packed even early in the morning. Made more sense as we saw a LOT of campers around Boulder Canyon. No one was in the box. Only saw three groups on Battleship. Excellent views of Geronimo Head, Malapais, 2830 & more.

Found a few more interesting looking spots to explore on future trips.

Peak 3915 is a designation that (to my knowledge) was made by vanman several years ago. This green/yellow peak can be seen from the parking lot of Hieroglyphics Trail #101. This peak splits Chuparosa and Ermagerd Canyons. This peculiar peak has been taunting me each time I have been in the area and I set out to check it off the list several weeks ago.

Long story short, I had multiple unsuccessful attempts. At first I tried ascending via Chuparosa Canyon. This is probably possible but I was alone and there were a couple of class 4 moves I wasn't crazy about. Then I used a familiar route. Essentially using the Superstition Peak 5057-Balanced Rock Loop route until a turn off presented itself. I realized this would work but there was heavy fog surrounding 3915 on 1/2/2023. I decided to turn back empty handed. I am glad I did.

Today was the day. I passed through the absolute zoo that is Hieroglyphic Trail #101, continued up Hieroglyphic canyon and arrived at Balanced Rock. The use trail continues southeast until the turn off. This turn off is right at the top of Chuparosa Canyon. This is off-trail but it isn't too bad if you like that sort of thing. There are game/use trails to follow if you have a good eye. You get a good look at 3915 the whole way there.

The main cluster is a bit of a maze as you can probably tell from the GPS route. I explored a bit but not all. There are deep grooves cut across the entire top section where you will find lush vegetation, full size trees, and lots of wildlife signs. The actual peak ended up being accessible from the west side. I was almost there when I encountered a respectable sized arch. It's no Triple Arch, but you could probably drive a motorcycle through it. After the arch I made my way to the actual peak. The peak is pretty great. Excellent views of both canyons (Chuparosa & Ermahgerd) and Turk's Head. At the very top, there is a cut out you can carefully descend. It sits on the very edge of the cliff. I couldn't resist. It is very cool. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't like exposure. It is a long way down into Chuparosa.

I plan on going back to this area. This might make for a good guide candidate. Since I am pretty familiar with this area, I decided to do it without the aid of GPS tracking. Sometimes it's nice to simply intuit where to go. When I do this again I will use this route and hopefully clean things up a bit. Also, not sure what happened with this route but it didn't start until a ways into the Hiero hike. My Garmin connect put the trip at 7.64 miles and 2559 ft of vertical gain.

Really enjoyed this one.

Mound has been on the list for some time. While 172A was unpleasant, an old Chevy Suburban made the trip just fine. There are a few spots along Reavis Ranch & Fireline that are pretty damaged and require a little more attention. This was the furthest East I have ventured in the Superstitions and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully the 88 is repaired someday and I can take advantage of easier access.

I have been aware of this peak for a few years and heard mixed reports on peak views. I was pleasantly surprised. You get a great view of four peaks from behind and most of the Superstition Ridgeline is visible off to the West. There were quite a few ladybugs on top. Peak ladybugs are always welcome.

We saw several White-tailed deer. No bears. Lots of cat tracks.

I should also mention that it looks like the trip register on the peak was destroyed. Looks like a glass container that shattered some how. If there is another register up there, I did not find it.

Was originally going to try and find Peak 3915, but I didn't want to deal with the weather. It was cloudy and rainy. Ended up checking out some falls further up Hiero and scouted part of the trip to 3915. Turns out I was extremely close. Didn't really feel like off trailing in dense fog and ran. It turned out to be a good decision as I encountered light hail coming down Hiero.

First time out in the Mazatzals and we decided to knock the peak out first. After reviewing all the triplogs I decided on Suicide Ridge for the up and Y Bar the down.

Suicide ridge is pretty wild. I didn't see signs of human activity or cairns at any point on the ridge. The route is very direct but more than doable. Snow was present on top of the ridge. Ord and Four Peaks came into view. Mazatzal Peak was great. Summit register, lady bugs, Geo disk, the whole thing.

My Ambit 3 started giving me some directional issues when we started the descent. This resulted in some minor issues getting started down Y Bar. After 15 minutes or so we found a beautiful cairn. It's funny how much joy a pile of rocks can give you. I personally would not want to be in this area without GPS. The brush on the descent was unpleasant. At some point an agave got the better of me. At this point, we decided to change the name of the route to "Why Bar" instead of Y Bar.

It was nice to finally reconnect to the actual trail section. After that, it was trail all the way back to the car.

Peak bagging is always a treat.

The stats for this triplog (Distance, AEG, & Total Time) reflect one way and NOT out & back.

After reaching Razorback in the weeks prior, Golden Dome was on the to-do list. Following the official Razorback guide until you reach the water tanks was a good decision. After reach the water tanks, we followed the only other GPS route listed on-site to reach Golden Dome (Thank you to DixieFlyer for another Goldfields route).

The off-trail hiking from the water tanks to the NW face of Golden Dome can be categorized as steep but only moderately "bushwacky". We purposely veered off the GPS route in this section to explore other options, but quickly returned to the established route.

The Golden Dome structure is very impressive. The golden/yellow rock is scattered with purple rocks in a way that makes it appear like a strange chocolate chip cookie.

We took the NW approach but actually decided to ascend to the right of the previously mentioned chute (circled in red). I felt that an area just to the right of the mentioned chute felt better. I feel like there is always a level of personal preference when it comes to scrambling/flirting with actual climbing. The area to the right has one 12-15 ft section that requires 3 or 4 moves on rock. I would say this one section is on par with a more demanding move you might have to make on the Mummy Lode or Four Peaks Mother Lode.

After completing the mentioned section, you have access to the top. The views are fantastic. Golden Dome towers above the landscape. You have 360 degree views that include Saguaro Lake, Mt. Ord, Four Peaks, The Superstitions, Red Mountain, and the Mcdowells.

If there was a register on the top, I couldn't find it. I should have brought one.

Golden Dome is a gnarly one.

Hell of a day.

Finally made it out to Kofa. A 94 GMC 2500 made it out to the trailhead with street tires. It was a little sandy in spots. Took things real slow for the first mile to soak up all the new views. We decided to hit Ten Ewe first and then popped over to Signal after that with a bonus excursion to check out some solar panels.

Kofa reminds me of the Superstitions but it doesn't have the Superstitions vibe where you feel like everything is trying to kill you.

We saw five Bighorn Sheep. Fantastic day.

This was my first real trip into the Goldfields (minus a short trip to the Horns of Dilemma in 2018). About 20 minutes in, I started asking myself why I hadn't come out here more often! The first section with a "trail" must have put me in a good mood. The "trail" quickly vanished and I felt that mix of excitement and anxiety that off-trail hikes provide.

In addition to Razorback, we decided to get Pedestal Arch and Triple Arch.

This hike is almost perfect. A mix off trail and off-trail, solitude, beautiful canyons, water tanks, a fantastic peak, and two magnificent arches. The only thing missing is a nice solar panel :D . Razorback was surprisingly easy to summit and the route finding was as straightforward as something like this can be (thanks hikerdw and dixieflyer for your gps routes).

Triple Arch was the highlight of the trip. Never seen anything like that before. Golden Dome is now on the to-do list. Happy to be in the Goldfields.

I have been meaning make triplog entries on Hike AZ for some time, and I figured I would start with the Mother Lode.

Before 4/11, I had hiked Brown's peak once, and made one attempt at the Mother Lode in a 1-2-3-4 fashion. The 1-2-3-4 attempt was not pretty. We bagged 1 and 2 in a timely manner but really struggled down 2. We eventually hit the saddle and realized shortly after that we should stop. In retrospect, I am glad we did.

This trip we decided to do the 4-3-2-1 approach. We started at just before 7 AM and hit Amethyst Peak by 9:30 AM. We ran into another group that had done the ML before while we were coming down Amethyst. The group quickly passed us on the way down 4 and we were fortunate enough to see where they started the more technical sections of peak 3. Just as we started getting into the heart pounding moves up peak 3, clouds moved in and snow started to fall. We bagged peak 3 as the weather conditions worsened.

As we started our descent down peak 3, the sun began to shine. We made it to the spot we had turned back in the 1-2-3-4 approach and breathed a sigh of relief. We made excellent time down to the saddle between 3 and 2, took a short break, and started the hike around the east face of 2. We caught a glimpse of one of the hikers from the group ahead of us making an ascent straight up the "ramp" of peak 2 (pic included). It was incredible. Peak 2 was slow but nothing compared to our previous attempt. Peak 2 was ours.

The descent of peak 2 was quick on the knife edge but I accidently led us too far down and to the east and we paid the price. The only upside was that we found a phone that someone had dropped in the area earlier that day. The phone was successfully returned to its owner on 4/12! Anyway, down peak 2 was slow. We finally we got back on track and went thru the window rock formation.

Our ascent up peak 1 was quick and we were ready to be done. We bagged Brown's just as more rain/sleet/snow started coming down. We went down the chute and back to the car! When I hit stop on my Suunto it was 5:45 PM.

Overall this hike was difficult but very fulfilling. I don't see myself doing it again. HA

This was my first time up to Mt. Ord and really my first time in the general area. Over the last few months, I had been doing hikes that involved some level off trail/ route finding, and this one offered a break from all that.

The hike was enjoyable and since it follows a road you can kind of turn your mind off and just walk. I think this peak had the most equipment (radio tower stuff) of any peak I have been on so far. We spent about an hour on top just enjoying the views. On the way down, we briefly talked to a pair of trail runners that were making their second ascent of the day. Maybe next time.

After a *separate* trip to Mt. Kimball + The Window + Window Peak, Cathedral Rock was considered a must do. This hike really was an adventure. The only other trip up Esperero Trail was about two months prior. We encountered heavy snow and knew we would have to return later.

The last half mile of this trip had a bit of snow. The entire area after the Cathedral Rock Trail turn off is just incredible. Seems like things move at a different pace up there. Very remote feeling.

The rope was still in good condition. The climb up wasn't bad, but I can see some being weary about attempting this last section. I used the rope to get up and down.

This is one of the bigger day hikes I have done so far. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

The entire Saturday was open so we decided to knock out as much stuff as we could out of First Water. The plan was to return to Battleship and La Barge Box and visit Peak 2830 for the first time.

Let me just say... Peak 2830 was the highlight of the day. This peak really tied the area together in my mind. I really like when you can see hikes you have done before from different angles. Peak 2830 scratched the off-trail itch.

For some reason this small peak doesn't get a lot of visitors. The last entry in the register was in 2018 and the one before that was 2013.
