All the trails off the Crest are in bad shape, overgrown, in parts occluded by tree falls, scree slopes and disappear frequently. The Saulsbury was the best of these, and even then it was a guessing game at times as it followed just off the ridgelines back to the Crest.
Bootlegger goes thru an old burn area, big views, leads down into and near Rock Creek. Rock Creek had a little water past a spring flowing in the drainage. At time lots of poison ivy and pretty much no trail, just follow the drainage. At a slightly more open area find a large cairn and old sign posts, here you leave the drainage and cut over to the signed Saulsbury saddle. The faint trail right out of the saddle leads to the crest trail, the main trail continues down into Saulsbury canyon toward Turkey Creek.
The Tub fire has just started up behind Fly peak and I was hiking right toward it, you connect to the Crest trail near Cima Saddle. Lots of air activity, helicopters, tankers, spotter planes. I saw very little smoke and no flames.
Back on the Crest trail it is a short walk back to Rustler Park. Some flowers were blooming and I saw a peregrine Falcon.
Nice day, rather hot, and not quiet in the forest. I wish the fire fighter guys good luck. |
