The old alignment crossed the cienega high above on a bridge, the new one crosses into it. Much more aesthetically pleasing. I remember when I hiked through here in 2008 thinking "why doesn't the trail go into the lush cottonwoods and flowing water below?" Well, now it does. On the north side, the trail comes out of the cienega via a trail going up a small gully. A small gully that was nothing but a boulder-choked mess when we arrived Thursday morning. I knew it was going to be a back-breaking day. We hauled in a rock carrier, numerous rock-bars, a come-along winch, and a giant jack to transform it from a gully to a trail. Where the trail crosses Cienega Creek is just gorgeous right now with a canopy of golden cottonwoods. |
