john, angela and i had scheduled it twice, and were weathered out both times
third time was the charm, although it was a little warmer than we anticipated on sunday
quite a contrast from only a week ago
met up in fountain hills, and angela competently guided tonto up FR143
this road is an adventure in itself
while rough and slow, the scenery is good throughout
a few stream crossings, two additional trailheads to investigate, saguaros, ocotillos, rugged terrain and brown's peak getting closer
got going around 9:30 and made the gradual ascent to the saddle
took a good look at the chute and decided to just take things a step at a time
first the approach, and then a very fun scramble up the chute
the biggest hazard is all the loose rock
nothing too sketchy, other than a couple sections of scree
a final boulder climb to the peak and we were there
incredible 360 views of roosevelt lake, the mazatzals, supes and the other three peaks
a little too hazy to see humphrey's
spent some time having a snack and kicking back just looking around
gave some thought to a motherlode one day - not sure about that
time to head down, and although there were a couple spots going up that i thought i might have trouble getting down (violating the first rule of climbing), we just took it slowly and carefully and made it just fine
john and i do some climbing, and i have to say that angela kept right up with us - impressive!
especially carrying all that camera gear
as we were descending the part of the trail to the saddle, we ran into johnlp and juan jaime iii, who were on their second hike of the day
nice meeting you, jjiii
hiked back down at a steady pace, and finished early afternoon
the boys blew by us in the jeep on the drive back
again enjoyed the scenery, if not the actual driving part
thanks again for that, angela
very happy to do this peak, and will do it again once the memory of getting there fades
a great day with angela and john in the four peaks wilderness |
