the canyon
cactuscat suggested this overnight backpack a few weeks ago, and i could hardly believe my good fortune in being able to do this
one of those things that might have been on my wish list for a long time otherwise
such a beautiful pristine canyon, lush and green
started from the west trailhead monday morning and proceeded upstream, sometimes following a trail, crossing the creek often, and sometimes walking in the creek
while relatively warm for may, the shade and presence of flowing water kept us cool enough
took a couple of nice breaks to enjoy the surroundings and a snack
soon found ourselves selecting a campsite between virgus and horse camp canyons
after setting up camp, went up horse camp canyon a ways until reaching something we weren't comfortable climbing (or rather getting back down)
didn't find a good swimming hole; the ones large enough were kind of murky
relaxed and made some dinner back at camp and took a dip before dusk
next morning went up virgus canyon about a mile or so before hitting an obvious stopping point
i enjoyed the slick rock and the bouldering in the canyons and next time would like to go all the way up aravaipa without the backpack
too soon it was time to pack up and head out
felt better with the backpack going downstream, and just enjoyed being in the moment in the riparian environment
took one last good swimming hole break a couple miles before exiting
saw a little too much of one party at that spot :o
saw a rattlesnake and another snake, a couple of herons, squirrels
kelly will have a better rundown of the birds - she really has an eye for spotting them
saw one group doing some research on non-native fish and maybe a dozen others total
would like to do this hike in the fall

the logistics
i haven't been backpacking in years, and have only gone twice (havasu falls and rocky mountain national park)
upgraded some gear and dusted off what i though would still be serviceable
was very happy with my choices for a tent, sleeping pad, hiking poles and water filter, and all items will be useful for car camping and dayhiking, too
would like to think i will do some backpacking on a regular basis so i'm coveting a new pack
the pack weight didn't bother me at all, although the first day my shoulders were aching
found an adjustment that seemed to take that pressure off
the hiking poles were quite useful for keeping my center of gravity balanced
brought the right stuff, but could have used a few more snacks
we ended up at los hermanos on the way home, so i didn't starve
my oldest hiking shoes were perfect
kelly got the permit easily enough, as we were able to go on a weekday, and it isn't that far from the valley - a very doable trip

giving this experience a 9.8, with 0.1 deductions for bugs, and for not finding sirena's swimming hole
thanks for sharing the idea, kelly, along with your knowledge of the canyon
you know i loved it :)
enjoyed your company
