| no partners | | I was out doing recon on potential ways to get in and up to the Mormon Grove TH to finish up the AZT. The route I had considered (FR393) is closed both off of 87 and South of Bartlett Lake.
I did end up driving up to the road in across from Mt. Ord where the road equipment had been parked. To my surprise the gate was partially open. I drove in and checked things out and ended up talking with some Forest Service guys. As it would turn out there are THREE new fires now. They said one was the "Charley" one was the "Ice Man" and I don't recall the name of the third. I'm thinking to myself this isn't looking good for the road in to open as planned in a week. I guess time will tell and in the mean time hopefully the fires get put out by some heavy rain storms.
As I was heading back I passed the good ol' Ballantine Trail and decided to hike it in a bit. I didn't get started until 2:30 so it was hot and muggy out. I could certainly smell the smoke from the fires and as I gained elevation I could see the smoke in the distance. In the short time I was hiking it was interesting to watch the amount of smoke grow considerably in size. I went in and up to a saddle and decided to head on back. On the way out I took the Pine Creek trail for a little added variety.
Looks like I may be hiking from Hwy 87 up to the Mormon Grove TH and from there to Mt. Peeley. Then from Peeley to Barnhardt. At least that is my back up plan for now if they don't open the gate in a week. The rangers did say that they don't do anything to stop people from walking in. |
