I arrived at the Sunflower TH around 11:30 and a 32 miler wasn't feasible with daylight considerations. On top of that it was 100 degrees out so I took the easy way out. Looking at the map I could see that the Mormon Grove Trailhead Junction was just over half way. Perfect! I made that my destination and did an out and back to there. I will be back as soon as they open the gate on 87 for Sycamore Creek to finish the top half.
This hike was difficult as it was almost like walking thru a cemetery. The burn was so fresh that it really had an impact on me. The good news is that mother nature is a powerful thing and her handy work has already begun. Time heals all wounds they say.
Along the way I had a couple horses join me for about a quarter mile. I also saw two other hikers which really surprised me. Clearly by the lack of tracks on the trail it hasn't seem much traffic in a while.
I did my best along the way to pick up downed branches, and burned debris on the trail. It is about 90% clear up to the Mormon Grove TH. |
