I had wanted to do it at one point last year, but it was during the summer and too hot by the time I got in the area. I was a little worried it might be too cool this morning after the cold front went through last night, but once I got on the trail and moving it was fine.
I had received a recommendation from RWStorm to hike the loop clockwise, but I didn't spot the Gould Mine trail at the trailhead so I compromised and went up the wash to Mam-A-Gah then took the Sendero Esperanza from there to the Norris and up. The longer, more gradual ascent going clockwise allowed me to keep a strong pace going all the way up. At the top I was rewarded with the nice city view this peak offers, as well as a nice view of cloud-topped Mount Lemmon. The sun came out while on the summit, which helped a bit to dry me out before I headed down the Kings Canyon Trail back to the trailhead. I saw just a few people out on the trail early on a Friday morning, but by the time I got back the parking lot was filling up. |
