Took the BA down to Bright Angel Campground where I was to be stationed for a week doing volunteer work with the GCHBA crew. The canyon was very smoky, and the nasty air made it easier to just put my head down and hike, so I made pretty good time. I left Tucson at about 7:30a, made it to the canyon in time to hit the trail at 1:30 and got to the bottom just in time for dinner at about 5:30.

I considered taking the Old Bright Angel route that Kurt showed me last time, but since I was alone I figured I'd stick to the better traveled route below Indian Gardens. I don't suppose it would have done me any good, as I saw more mule deer (3) than people (0) on the bottom portion of the trail. Didn't run into another soul until I got to the sliver bridge.

The work project was a blast, as always. Fun people, great location and the kind of satisfying physical labor I never get to do anymore...it was perfect. Though the canyon remained smoky all week, we did get occasional breaks when the wind would blow.

One interesting note: we noticed a much larger presence of foxes than we'd ever seen before - most of us had an upclose encounter a number of times. Sjors says that since the foxes reappeared a couple of years ago, the squirrel population has suddenly gotten 'under control'. Where the numbers of squirrels in the BA Campground area used to spike in the spring and then stay too high all summer and fall, now they spike in the spring and quickly decrease to a relatively manageable number for the rest of the year. Foxes and squirrels: nature knows how to fix a problem SO much better than we ever can!
