Spent the day driving up here, moving in, and running errands without so much as a peak at the Canyon, so I was ready for a little afternoon hike to stretch my legs. I didn't particularly want my first hike below the rim to be on the Bright Angel ... but it was the quickest, easiest thing to do.
Turned out to be very enjoyable ... only irritation was a group of people below the first tunnel who were yelling - loudly and for a long time - back and forth to each other. I will never understand why people will destroy the peace and quite to yell things like "hey!" and "que paso?" ... GRRRR!
Went down to mile and a half rest house in about 30 mins, and back up in 50 ... and enjoyed every minute. I have to go very slow uphill to keep my heartrate from racing too much, and a little pressure-breathing helped with lack of oxygen.
Finished up and was treated to an elk family crossing the train tracks, then up the hill, seemingly intent on checking in to the lodge! |
