| no partners | | Well here is a brief account of the "old man rim-to-rim", which included a night at Phantom Ranch.
This trip was made possible by a wild idea I had to call Xanterra about 10 days ago. They unexpectedly had space in the male and female dorms. Then I got the last room at the North Rim for the night before. Then, when checking in at the BA desk, they asked my wife and I if we wanted to upgrade to a cabin at PR. That never happened before! For $30 more, sure...this is already not a cheap 3 day vacation.
Anyway great North Rim ambiance as always...punctuated by a big thunderstorm seen through the big windows in the lodge restaurant. Enjoyable walk down the N.Kaibab with the time and energy to visit Upper Ribbon Falls along the way (recommended). It got a little bit hot in the box in the early afternoon and I was looking forward to laying in the creek at PR but the mud flowing in from Phantom Canyon scotched that idea.
Another big thunderstorm cooled things off at about 7:30PM, then an early departure the next morning up the Bright Angel Trail. I think we kept the temperature at ~80° as we climbed but the humidity was high and the sweat poured (at least mine).
Took the opportunity to see some of the pictographs along the Bright Angel. Thanks to alladinsane and Hippy for telling me where to look.
Lunch at McDonalds in Tusayan where we got to watch the Japanese employees welcoming the busloads of Japanese tourists. |
