My Dad was "old school". I remember growing up, how he would leave, and go Hunting and Fishing. I always wanted to go with him. ;) But I understand it now, it was the "boys" time away, with swearing and drinking and talking about all those things that men talk about. :o  It was no place for a "girl".... I remember being so jealous when my older brother got to start going with them... : rambo :

Finally, they had a good Fishing Trip in Colorado one year, and decided to take the whole family back up there the next...Six of us packed into a car. (Yes, cars were bigger then, it was a '68 Chrysler Newport. We called it the Banana Boat since it was yellow and Dad sold Bananas... :sl:) I was 12 at the time and fell totally in love with fishing on that Trip... :)

It would be another 7 years before Dad took me on another Fishing Trip. We went to Bartlett Lake and although I initially sucked at it, Dad kicked :pk: and we had an awesome time. After that Trip, Dad actually did something that was unprecedented in his life. He went Christmas shopping for me and I found a new Rod/Reel combo and Tackle Box under the tree that year... That was the beginning of an awesome partnership that lasted for the rest of his life. We fished for fun, we fished for money, we fished in a Club and participated in many Bass Tournaments over the years. Even after I got married and moved to Minnesota, I always came back, at least twice a year to Fish with him.

I moved back in '98 and the partnership went back to full-time and we had a ball... :D I got remarried, but continued to fish with him until he finally had to retire for health reasons in 2003. I continued to fish with the Bass Club until I changed jobs in 2004 and no longer had weekends off. Then it became just fishing for pleasure occasionally... ;) It just wasn't the same without him.... I did enjoy telling him an occasional "Fish Tale" every once in awhile... :D (And some of them were actually true... )

He struggled very heavily with health problems the last few years. Just before this last Christmas, I asked him what his favorite Lake was. He said that that would have to be Alamo Lake. It kind of took me by surprise, as I thought he would say Roosevelt or San Carlos, but after thinking about it, I realized that he had always done well at Alamo...Not the most Scenic Lake that we've fished, by far, but, at Alamo, he always seemed to know where to find the fish, and he caught some pretty good ones there too... : app :

Dad passed away on January 9th of this year and I knew that I wanted to go back to Alamo Lake. It had been at least 9 years since I'd been, and now I had a very good reason to go back...It seemed fitting too, as Alamo Lake was the first overnight fishing Trip that I had ever done with Dad.

And so I went...The first full day I was there, I fished off the Bank for a few hours, after a Rainstorm had moved on...I anticipated the fishing to be slow, after seeing and hearing the Fishing Reports, and it was. I think I got one bite the whole time. No one was catching anything, not even the guys that I ran into, who were out in their boats. But it was good and the Waterfowl provided constant entertainment...(I didn't see them catch anything either... ) And the dispersing clouds allowed a pretty nice Sunset, providing a beautiful closure to the day... :)

The next day was perfect weatherwise. Sunny, warm and no wind. It was the perfect day to try my hand at fishing out of a Kayak. AZWaterRat was nice enough to lend me his inflatable Kayak for this Trip...I paddled and fished, and paddled some more, visiting places from my past and checking out a few new ones...Had lunch in a Cove and just enjoyed the day. The Fishing was slow again on this day. I ended up getting skunked for the whole weekend (there's a reason we used to fish this Lake in April, ), but I didn't really care. It was just good to be out here, fishing with Dad one more time... 8) And then the day was done and the reason I came here was finished...And it was perfect... ;)

In memory of Richard (Dick) Barnhart. 1930-2013 Best Friend, Partner, Captain of the Boat, and Father....Forever in my Heart... :kf:

P.S. Yo, Dad, I expect a full Fishing Report when I return...Just save some Fish for me, would ya??? :)
