Wednesday 3/20: Bright Angel Trailhead, 2pm. Overcast/hazy hike down to Indian Garden, making camp by 5:30pm. Windy night, dusty, hazy, warm. Had to improvise tarp rigging at Indian Garden. Thursday 3/21 : Left Indian Garden 10am, at Phantom Ranch 2pm. Clear Creek trail, 4:30pm, campsite just South of Sumner Point by 6:15pm. We noticed some evidence of campsite impact just to the West of the use area boundary. tsk tsk. I guess some people underestimate that elevation gain on the way up from Phantom Ranch. We certainly did! That last push to the dual cairns marking the use-area boundary was harsh. No signs of other backpackers. Clear, cool night. Bright moon, coyote howls, then abiding silence. Friday 3/22 : 6pm coffee, eggs and potatoes. Amazing sunrise. On the trail at 8am. Some trail magic : a Phantom Ranch camper from New York on a trip with his teenage son met us on our way down. Upon discovery of our East Coast roots, offered us French press coffee in his campsite. Awesome. South Kaibab TH by 10am. Appropriately caffeinated, we had lunch at 1pm just below The Tipoff. A tortuous, windy, dusty and at times, terrifying slog ensued, ending at exactly 6:01 pm at Yaki Point.
