Until this last week, I had only been to the Grand Canyon once, in my entire life. I was 18, and my Uncle took me, along with his family, to go see it. We hit a couple of View Points and then it was time to go.... :sk: I have no clue where those few pictures even are.... Pretty pathetic for an AZ Native....

So, 31 years later, when JJ3 said he needed help with a Shuttle in the area, it was kind of a no brainer to help him out. :GB: It was about time I returned to see it, especially armed with the Information, Stories and Photos that I have been seeing on HAZ this last year. :)

Since JJ is a Speed Hiker, I knew that I would not have alot of time to do any serious Hiking, but took along some Descriptions that were "possibles" in the Time Frame I had. As it turned out, I shouldn't have wasted the Paper... :sl: I had kinda planned on "winging" it, and as it turned out, I was just another shameless Tourist with a Camera.... :sl:

JJ showed me a couple of areas, before I dropped him off at the AZT TH by the Grandview Fire Tower. My day started right there... :D I certainly couldn't pass up climbing a Fire Tower... :GB: The Cabin was locked up, but I could climb to just below it and enjoy the Views...And the Wind... And the Picture Taking commenced.... :D

After I got done there, I studied my new Grand Canyon Map, and decided I wanted to hit some Overlooks before I did any Hiking, so I drove East and started at Navajo Point. Weellll, it was addicting, seeing all the Views, and I just kept driving Overlook to Overlook, eating up the Memory Card in the Camera.... :o

I worked my way back towards the West, taking pictures. I did walk down and sample the Grandview Trail for about 1/4 Mile, but my watch said I needed to press on, so I came back up. I was hoping to at least do the Hike out to Shoshone Point, but just as I got to the TH and got my Boots on, JJ texted me and said he would be finishing earlier than planned... I might have been able to still do it, but didn't feel like rushing anything today, so I got back in the car and hit a couple more Overlooks before starting the Drive out of the Park. I hate to admit it, but I was one of the silly Tourists that stopped at an Elk Jam and took a few pictures. Just not used to non-skittish Elk...It was too good of an opportunity to pass up and there was this big Bull there, surrounded by his Harem.... :D

I drove out of the Park and down to Moqui Station to pick up JJ. I was 10 minutes early and he was late... :o About 15 minutes past his ETA, I decided to Hike a little bit of the AZT, since I was there. I kept expecting to run into JJ, but he just was not there... After about 1/2 mile or so, I turned around, expecting him to dash up behind me any second, but he never did. So unlike him, and now I was worried that somehow he had gotten to the Jeep via another Route, and since I had the Keys, I started hoofing it back. I met him at the Junction of where the Trail spurs off to go to the Station...He was coming from the South...  Apparently he was in a Zone and completely missed the Turnoff onto the Spur Trail and had gone about 1 1/2 miles further than he was supposed to... We walked back to the Jeep and got going....

I made the ill fated suggestion that we take FR 305B/305 back out, to see if it was shorter than the Route I took in, (FR320/301). FR 301 was kinda rough, so I thought we should check out the Official AZT Directions to Moqui Station. Boy, was that a mistake.... :o FR305B, FR776 and FR305 were all in terrible shape and not very well marked. Erase that Direction from your AZT Sheets folks, FR320 to FR301 is waaaayyyy better!!!

We finally made it out and went to Tusayan for Gas and Dinner before calling it a day. I didn't get to really Hike any of the Canyon today, but I did get a sense of where things were on the South Rim, even though I never even made it into the Village.... It was a good Orientation Day and I'm not sorry I did it that way. I will feel alot more comfortable going up there for a Hike now, at least having an idea of the layout, and I really spent alot of time "taking in" the Canyon. It was almost like seeing it for the first time.... :)

Could not have worked out better, John. It was a good day for both of us!!! :D : app :

P.S. Don't cringe folks, I know you have seen a thousand Canyon pictures this year. I plan on only posting 1 Page, most of the pictures taken will be just for me....I'll just share the Best of the Best.... :)
