I checked the HAZ Wildflower Report and hit this little hike on my way back from the transfer station. From the 1900 Desert Vista Trailhead I headed up the Hawks Nest Trail .41 miles to the junction with the Dixie Mtn. Loop Trail, with Brittlebush everywhere in full bloom. But it wasn't until reaching the saddle and heading east that everything started to fill in. Poppies, Lupine, Fiddleneck, and a few others I don't know the names of yet lightly blanketed the north slope. I took some pictures, leaving the trail to the south to explore a rocky knob I was pretty sure I had checked out about 10 years ago before there was a park here, but upon approaching the top, I heard and saw not one but two beehives and circled counterclockwise to give them berth.
I got to the top and came around the east side, where I found some shade and a nice view on a "Rockalounger". Just as I was having a sip and snack, I heard a sound slowly growing louder - bees. I could see a thin cloud rising over the rocks to my right as I slowly pulled my hat down and drew my pack over my face and hands in a fetal position. :oplz: The seconds passed slowly as the sound grew louder and I tried to decide in which direction I could run with the best chance of high speed without wiping out. Fortunately after a minute or so the sound moved to my left and faded. :y:
Relieved,I headed back down to the trail, feeling this had been eventfull enough for a short hike. But just below the junction on the Hawk's Nest Trail, I noticed a nest in a Saguaro with two furry ears poking up - a Great Horned Owl! I was able to get some decent shots, but I can't wait to go back with a tripod to reach up and get a little closer. My Mom's coming in from Michigan this week and loves both flowers and birds, and I know exactly what we're going to do!
