First I checked out Hart's pyramidal tomb and the fishing ponds - very peacefull. Then on to Hole-in-the-Rock, where I had the place to myself for a bit, watching the planes rise and fall through the green cloud that hangs over the city. From there I could see in the distance where the shot had been taken, so I headed out of the park onto McDowell road, where there is parking access to the northern main butte. Crossing the ampitheater, I circled clockwise to the southeastern face, where I did my best to recreate the shot. From there I boogied to the rock knob southwest, which required some hand holds to summit, but no real exposure and very solid rock. Then north back to the main butte, where I summited the lesser summit to the west. This required some 50 degree slope climbing with potentially serious exposure, I'm glad the rock is solid. I followed the ravine that cuts the butte in half back to the truck. I'm not sure if there is a safe way to summit the main north butte, maybe next time. |
