It was still dark as I drove the Picacho Wash 4WD/High Clearance/Pinstripe shortcut from the Carefree Hwy to Castle Hot Springs road and the Red Picacho spur road (saves 9 miles and 41 minutes). Parked by the old mine and watched the sun rise to bathe Red Picacho. Took the dirtbike trail in the wash for the first few hundred yards, then left it to climb the slope toward the Red saddle. I checked out the route proposed by rlrjamy, Chumley, and Patrick L, and then another up the next large crack to the right of their route. I thought the holds were better and really thought I would be on top in a few minutes. But the combination of the frozen rock, cold wind, numb fingers, and lack of belay caused me once again to turn back from bagging my only nemesis. I had hoped the Event Post would draw interested parties, but the short notice probably didn't help much (and it is Hike Arizona, not Climb Arizona).
I knew White Picacho was just a scramble, so I headed down the saddle and through a break in the rocks to bag the easy unnamed summit between the two Picacho's. As I descended and approached White, I was startled by what I'm pretty sure was big cat urine. I don't know the difference between Bobcat and Mountain Lion, but this was no house Kitty.
With a big smile on my face I scrambled throught the break, then zigged left and right to the summit. It's a cool mountain, quite rugged on the other faces, but the cold wind made enjoying the view for any amount of time out of the question, so I headed down.
Rather than returning the way I had come, I circled to the south of the two summits between Red and White, then dropped down into the big wash where I was able to join the dirtbike trail I had used that morning. I returned to the truck, not having seen another soul all day.
After having a late lunch, I took the long way back on Castle Hot Springs road, a beautiful drive any day of the year.
With gear and a climbing partner, I'll bag Red one day - but it can wait.
