"Who's up for the Lava River Tube?", I proposed, standing on the edge of the huge fire circle. It was about 8:30 pm, and after several HAZzers had warned to stay clear of the new Supermegamall that it was by day, I figured it would be a prime evening spelunk.
The fire crackled, someone pointed out it was a half hour drive, and then some more silence.
Hoping someone would follow my lead, I said I was going and would be back in a bit.
So much for that tactic. I arrived at the parking lot where a lone Honda sat. I packed up, checking my 3 flashlights and headed in. The entrance was wild, and I imagined coming across this before it was developed. The condensation on parts of the walls reflected my headlamp like glass beads, glittering like tiny crystals.
The going was slower than I expected, and I needed to get back for the festivities, so I only went as far as the split before copping a seat. Now completely adjusted to the tube, I switched off my headlamp for a while and listened to the incredible silence punctuated by occasional drips of water. As long as I'm not squeezing through some claustrophobic space, I love caves, and this was perfect.
After a bit, I checked my watch and packed up, heading back to the entrance just as I heard voices and saw headlamps coming up behind me. Two college guys from Flag were there for the first time as well, and we exited together.
The sign says "Day Use Area", but technically I don't know if that just refers to camping. I'll find out, and next time I'm in the area I'll be back to see the rest of this wild geologic feature - preferably during "off hours".

The past, the present, and the future walked into a bar.
It was tense.
