After sleeping in a bit my Dad and I took the shuttle piled high with gear out to the east end of the Rim Trail at the South Kiabab Trailhead. We heard German, French, and Arabic from the backpackers who were headed down into the Canyon - smiling, laughing diversity. :)
The air was cool as we traced our way along the edge on the paved path. Pipe Creek Vista, Mather Point, Yavapai (probably my favorite), Grandeur, and finally Verkamps Visitor Center all presented their perspective on the Big Ditch. Raptors rode the morning thermals below while a Bluebird flitted around the evergreens overhead. We took breaks at almost every vista, and what would otherwise have been a 2 hour hike took up a big chunk of the day.
At one point we heard a commotion as a group of about a dozen college-age kids approached the edge with one girl holding her hands over her eyes. She was absolutely beside herself with nervous excitement, and for the longest time just stood there, saying, "I can't do it!". When she finally pulled her hands away, she screamed at the top of her lungs, then bent over with her hands on her knees as her friends filmed and supported her. Her mouth hung open and I thought she was going to pass out. What an amazing moment, I hope her friends post the video.
After reaching the shuttle stop where we had started, we drove over to the General Store to look at t-shirts and were lucky to find The Hippy working in the Camping Department. We tore her away from fluffing the Coonskin hats long enough to say hi and show us the 5 pound note she had earned earlier as a tour guide. We talked about next years Tough Mudder, and she pointed us in the direction of the Maswik Lodge for dinner. She was right - the chicken burrito with rice and beans was only 8 bucks and delicious.
From there we went back to Yavapai for the sunset, followed by an early return to the room so we could get up for the sunrise. Once again we headed up to Yavapai as the morning light rose, and I surprised my Dad by putting headphones and an I-Pod on him with "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (the theme from 2001 A Space Odyssey), just as the sun crested.
A perfect end to a perfect short trip. When we got back to Phoenix I showed HAZ to my Dad, and by now he may be a member - so if your reading this, thanks for flying out, I had a great time!
