This is a fantastic hike and the off-trail sections are challenging but not over the top-- definitely a tough hike but not as hard and rugged as I had expected.
We followed Preston's official route and took the Y-Bar up to the peak's saddle and headed up. Its pretty steep but definitely not as steep as some things I've done recently. Maybe the South Canyon Route has blown "steep" out of the water for me There are a couple fun climbs on the way up with solid handholds-- a little exposure but nothing too unsafe.
We hit the top of the ridge and were greeted with tall pines and we made the gradual incline up to the summit. We had fantastic views-- Mt. Ord, Four Peaks, the Flat Iron, the Mogollon Rim, and we could even see snow-capped Humphreys.
We took the north ravine down. At first, it is wide and easy going with some patches of snow still on the ground. Slowly it begins to tighten up with some nice water flow and the rock hopping and scrambling begins. There are a couple waterfalls to by-pass. Its a beautiful area. There's always so much to explore in the Mazzies.
We eventually made it back to the Barnhardt and made our way quickly back to the trailhead. We flew down the trail after rock hopping for so long.
This is a fantastic hike I will definitely put on my yearly list! |
