| partners | | Jim invited me along to Mazatzal Peak, and since I hadn't hiked it before, I was excited to give it a try. We headed up Y Bar a little after 9am. I know plenty of people don't like Y Bar, but I don't think it's too bad right now. We took a break at the saddle, then headed up toward the peak. Slow going, of course, but the hike up was pretty much as I expected it to be. I don't know that we were always on the best route up, but better options didn't seem obvious, and we made it up without any problems.
We took a long snack break at the summit, and enjoyed the views. Great views today to the north and west, not so great to the east and south due to smoke from various fires, primarily the Fulton fire. We descended down the drainage to the north, which was actually a very pleasant hike down. There were plenty of trees that I imagine would be quite pretty in fall color. We took a few short breaks, mainly to take pics or determine the best way down/around a few of the dry falls. I personally wouldn't want to take this drainage if there was water in it, but any other time, I would probably prefer it.
Once down to Barnhardt, it was a fast, easy hike downhill to the trailhead. Perfect weather today, and a great day for this one. Nice to meet you, Jim! |
