| no partners | | mazzy peak has been on my radar ever since johnlp and i hiked mazzy loop a year and a half ago
something i probably wouldn't do on my own, at least for the first time
several people have been up there recently, and mike commented that he wouldn't mind doing it again, so i took him up on it
up y bar, which is in good condition with no deadfall, unlike my last visit
cut up toward the peak a little before the saddle
i don't mind some off-trail in pursuit of a peak
have to admit i actually enjoyed it
a few scrambles/climbs (we had a discussion about the difference), and some manzanita bashing
mike knew the route pretty well
the last bit is on bedrock with grasses and pine trees up high
the summit was awesome - great views of the rim, roosevelt lake, four peaks, tonto basin, ord, peeley and sheep, and other peaks i don't know about
signed the register and headed down a drainage, following preston's official route
nicely wooded in the upper part
some rock hopping as you descend
the drainage narrows into a canyon and that part was cool
not much water flowing
some scrambles and a waterfall bypass, then the canyon opens back up into more rock hopping
eventually hit barnhardt, which is always a nice hike by itself
a light flow out of big kahuna; i had never seen it with water flowing
really enjoyed the day, and liked the off-trail stuff more than i would have thought
knew what to expect on the summit approach, and found the canyon to be a lot of fun
good hiking with mike for the first time, hopefully not the last
wasn't too warm, but there were a few too many bugs
overall a great time
i like peaks |
