Devils Mountain and Tough Boots invited me to come along and what's not like about Mazatzal Peak We used Preston's route which was spot on starting up the trail towards Y-Bar to the first saddle. From there it was straight up the ridge towards the summit which was an awesome section featuring several good rock scrambles. None were too difficult but definitely enough to keep things interesting. Eventually we made the summit and had lunch with great views of all the major surrounding peaks including snow capped Humphrey's Peak.
From the summit we headed down the north facing ravine where we saw a few patches of left over snow and Mike had some fun lobbing snowballs The ravine is pretty mellow near the top with some good pines but part way down canyon it starts to narrow and gives way to some really nice waterfall sections. Many of the write-ups for Mazatzal Peak don't really mention this part of the off trail hike which could be because often time it's dry. But on this day there was good waterflow and some nice waterfalls
Eventually we made it down the last section of boulder hoping and then onto the Barnhardt Trail for the hike out. We flew down the trail to the TH where we all enjoyed a post hike brew
