i've hiked many miles with weaver's needle in view, and have lately wanted to attempt this classic climb
we did this as an overnight, heading up peralta trail late saturday afternoon
north of fremont saddle, got buzzed by a rattlesnake
found the climber's trail to the base of the needle, hiking up a scree slope to the gully between the north and south spires
the first pitch is a scramble on good rock
the second is technical, and i belayed mike from the pipe as he led to the anchors above the chockstone
we also roped up for the 15 foot section above that, although it could be done without
the third pitch was a long scramble in fading daylight
the next section that we treated as technical as there is some exposure
a short scramble from there, and we were on the summit
topped out well past dusk, but there was a nice glow from the west
couldn't get good views at all to the east, and really didn't get the full effect of being on such a prominent summit
could see the florence prison lights, pinal county sprawl, and a backpacker's headlamp somewhere in boulder canyon
millions of stars provided light to sit on a summit rock and have some dinner
there are at least two flat areas with rock walls for sleeping, and it was so cool to lay in my bivy and look at the stars
didn't sleep well until early morning, and woke just as it was getting light
grabbed water and some granola bars to have breakfast watching the sunrise
what an awesome sight!
wished for a cup of coffee and my map
wandered around the summit area for awhile looking at various landmarks from above
eventually packed up and headed down
there is a fun rappel bypassing the fourth pitch, somewhat overhanging
then a scramble to the chockstone
mike rigged a single rope rappel for me to get as low as possible, then a double rap for himself that required some downclimbing
the descent from the peak was the easy part
more difficult for me was the scree slide back to peralta trail
a full pack made it pretty slow going
once back on peralta, it was smooth sailing to the trailhead
kind of a shock to see all the people hiking to fremont saddle
that's the story, now for some thoughts on the experience:
the climb wasn't difficult at all
i climbed in my hiking shoes with a full pack
had to take my pack off at one point on the first scramble and hand it up
we cached some water to lighten the load
mike clipped a bolt above the pipe, slung another pipe, and placed two cams on the left side of the chockstone
the scrambles were fun going up, slower for me going down with my balance thrown off by the pack
spending the night was a unique experience even with hauling all that gear and i'm glad we did it that way
next time though, i want to do it as a day hike/climb
this was only my fourth backpack, and i was pleased with my gear choices
tested a new backpack, a bivy and sleeping bag, all of which worked well
brought the right amount of food, water and clothing
the backpack provided me with a good training hike for the upcoming grand canyon trip
a grand adventure, for sure
it's a great feeling to stand on a summit like that
