| no partners | | i've wanted to do all of dutchman trail for some time
jack graciously agreed to shuttle me from first water to peralta this morning
search and rescue were out looking for three missing hikers
that cast a sobering reminder that superstitions hiking shouldn't be taken lightly
anyway, good to see jack again and catch up with him before he started his ranger duties
took off from peralta just before 8:00
birds singing, a nice breeze, and cool morning temps made for a good start
lots of wildflowers below miner's needle - lupine, Dichelostemma capitatum and poppies
water flowing everywhere
you couldn't go more than five minutes without the sound of flowing water
lots of water and some mud on the trail, flowing water in every drainage
creeks more full than i've ever seen them
passed coffee flat intersection and headed up to miner's summit for some great views
down to the bluff spring turnoff, where there is a nice little oasis
i know i've hiked the section north of that point with johnlp, but nothing looked familiar until hitting red tank trail
too bad i didn't pull my map out before then, because i was past labarge spring and didn't want to backtrack
somewhere along labarge, i wasted quite a bit of time trying to find a way across the creek at the first crossing
finally just walked through the creek
this was hilarious later when there were at least half a dozen more crossings to wade through
labarge creek was beautiful with so much water running
took two side trips, first to see the master map, then to charlebois spring
a little while after that, ran into dave1 - nice to meet you, dave!
made my way west to bull pass trail, but took the left and stayed on dutchman
i had not been on the part through needle canyon, and i think this was my favorite
continued west around black top mesa, then north through boulder canyon
great views of weaver's needle, palomino and bluff spring mountain
once into boulder basin, the trail is less rocky
hit parker pass and it was downhill from there
pretty familiar with that section
random thoughts:
didn't see anyone until close to labarge creek
saw half a dozen sets of two backpackers
the trail is quite overgrown in places
would like to do dripping springs super loop again
this is the longest hike i've done this year, and i held up better than i thought
more of these, please
water, water, everywhere - seems like a unique opportunity to see the superstitions like this |
