| no partners | | Jared was working again, so I took a couple buses up to (what I thought was) the closest stop to the trailhead of the Manana Trail. The hike started off innocently enough, through some trees, which opened up into some amazing(!) views of both coasts as soon as I hit the ridge, which was wide and grassy.
I took a quick snack break about 4 miles in on a big hill with a gorgeous view of the southern coast, after which things took a turn for the worse. The wide grassy ridge quickly narrowed and became steep, muddy, and overgrown. I had flashbacks to Bowman's trail, except this time I was alone and tired. As I continued my ascent, my range of vision became shorter and shorter as the fog became more dense. I could only ever see part of the ridge in front of me, so that I had virtually no idea how close I was to the summit.
After several promising peaks that ended up having a path continuing downwards on the other side along what I could only assume was the rest of the ridge, I was actually caught off-guard when I finally reached the sign marking the end of the trail. There were obviously no views of the Windward side of the island, as I couldn't see a single thing over the edge. Aw well. Maybe some day I'll do a ridge hike in Hawaii that doesn't end in a cloud, but not today! :P |
