I decided I would go past the pools to the tree line about 4 miles up the trail. The first two miles was pretty crowded with a variety of hikers. I saw a couple bright red cardinals in the riparian areas (or maybe it was just the same guy). He was singing quite loud which made him easier to spot.
Once I made it too the pools I didn't see anyone around. I hiked around to the right and looked over the edge down the falls to the pool below. Water level was pretty low, probably due to the lack of rain and snow this winter.
I continued up the trail about another mile and a half and saw many lizards, butterflies (including a couple of swallowtails), and a few other insects. A nice breeze helped make it the perfect day. On the way back I passed a guy who had a camp site set up past the pools. I heard him first and thought maybe it was a bighorn sheep.
Overall a great day! |
