Just as a lackluster wildflower season poops out, another phase of desert color arrives like gangbusters. Cactus flowers. The gorgeous Engelmann hedgehog blooms are peaking and the compass barrel is popping out with its waxy yellow flowers. This hike was as much photo shoot as exercise. I wanted to add to my catalog of desert-flower photos. Even ran across some latter-day wildflowers, the saintly globemallow and a few bright marigolds, all on the N dam. Short hike but a quality one.
