| no partners | | Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona have made a project of improving the Highline Trail. I was fortunate to join in Monday and Tuesday to help construct a high water crossing on Tonto Creek, below the fish hatchery. We started Monday about 8:30, and finished around 2:30 on Tuesday. Car camped a short distance away overlooking the Zane Gray cabin site.
The main task was to muscle or machine the BFR's (big flat rocks) into a path up to and across the steam to create a boulder-hop route. There had to be sufficient space left between the BFR's to allow the stream to pass through, without them becoming a dam that washes out when it floods. Time will tell if we guessed it right.
VOAz has purchased an incredible trail machine, which I am allowed to try to persuade to do my bidding on occasion. If you want a humbling experience, try it with an audience. The machine can lift a pretty good-sized boulder if it can grasp on to it, which works out most of the time.
We got most of them in place Monday, and I helped set them firmly in place so they don't wobble. Wet foot work there. We left a couple for me to try on Tuesday morning, which went fine.
Lots of fun in the woods.
(Need a "trail work" category.) |
