My original plan for the weekend was to hike Segment 8 of the Grand Enchantment trail through the Santa Teresa wilderness and Holdout Canyon. It seems, though, that the universe had other plans for me. When it became clear that it wasn't going to work out I asked Sirena if I could join her scheduled group for the AZT Passages 16&17. Of course, I've done these before (a few times), but I can't get enough of the area - and it felt right to join her for the Passages that we are stewards on. She already had a group of 8 signed up - it would be 10 with the 2 of us. A big group, but nothing I hadn't done before!

Because of the unseasonably warm weather and the dry conditions on the trail, Sirena decided to do the passage the way we always do - north to south - rather than keeping with her NOBO direction. It made water easier, and somehow felt more logical to hike TO the river, rather than away from it. We ended up being very glad for this decision - it was indeed quite warm, and even with huge stashes of water placed only a week before we arrived we almost came up short. I guess it's a testament to the popularity of the trail, but I was blown away that over 10 gallons of the stashes had been taken in that 1 week. At the last stash (near where the trail leaves the river for NOBO hikers), over half of the 12 gallons were gone when we arrived. It was a good thing that our group was down to only 4 hikers by then.

This was also the weekend of the AZT 300/750 bike race - and dozens of unsupported bike packers were traveling through the area (they aren't supposed to use the cached water). We didn't expect to see too many early on, as they were leaving from Mexico only a little before we were leaving from Picketpost. Amazingly, though, the guy who finished first actually passed us in the dark that first night - he finished the 300 in 1 day and 21 hours! Unreal! We encountered more and more cyclists as our hike went on, and it was fun to follow their progress when we had cell reception. These two passages are supposed to be among the best for bike riders, but the thought of riding even on these trails is way too much for me. I gotta hand it to those guys - that takes some huevos of pure stone.

This was the first group hike I've done where everyone had an umbrella...and we all used them! I spent the majority of the hike hiding under my chrome dome. This passage is short on shade, but long on views and scenic value, so it's a fair trade as long as you know how to keep your cool!

All in all, it was fantastic to hit the trail with Sirena *yet again*!
