I had originally planned on going to Flagstaff but got the chance to go to the Jug last minute and decided to go there instead. It could not had been a more perfect day to be out in the Salome Wilderness! Being such perfect day and in-season meant that we would probably come across many people......and that we did! The largest group we passed on our hike down was about 11-12 people which we decided to pass as quickly as we could before getting into the canyon. Water levels were below "normal" but there was still plenty of water flow as we made our way down. We saw many people with dry suits which in my opinion were not needed. Yes i was a bit cold after a couple swims but nothing a little sun exposure and keep moving couldn't fix. Once we reached the rappel area we came across a group of people who apparently weren't prepared for it and on top of it they had a 30-40lb dog and two year old kid who was really scared when his dad was making his way down the rappel. Now to me its cool to see parents taking their kids at an early age and exposing them to the outdoors but i would call taking a kid that young canyoneering highly irresponsible on his dad......and don't even get me started about that poor dog (which we didn't see how they got him down). After we passed the rappel obstacle there was a backup of at least 20 people waiting to get down the waterfall. From this point on it was three more swims before we reached the end of the canyon, i was not cold at the end but somehow all the pollen from the blooming desert has giving me some massive allergies but other than that it was a good saturday afternoon and a great preview to what i hope it will be a nice water hike season this summer!
