Since it was such a beautiful spring day and there's a holiday weekend in sight I made a command decision to take a break from the drudgery of my yard work and take a needed walk in the woods. I knew the water would still be high on the Sunrise River but I hoped I would be able to get across the bridge and hike the boardwalk loop through the marsh.
As I drove into the parking lot, I was moderately surprised to find that I was the only one here on a 75 degree day, no wind and light cloud cover so I sprayed some bug replant on my legs to deter the wood ticks and grabbed my camera. The trail through the woods was wet and water squished from around my shoes as I walked along. Mosquitoes are already out but not in sufficient numbers to take away from the enjoyment of the hike.
As I approached the bridge, I could see that the water was lapping at the bottom of the deck so I checked it and found that it was still solid enough to cross without getting wet. The boardwalk through the marsh is supported by Styrofoam flotation blocks so it rises and falls with the water levels making for an interesting wobbly walk.
The marsh was alive with the sounds of birds chirping, frogs singing their mating songs and somewhere off in the distance a Loon called out in its eerily forlorn tune. Yep, it looks like spring has sprung. The long hard winter was hard on the woods as several trees had snapped from the weight of the snows but the park service had already been along to cut trees that had blocked the trail.
The small swimming beach was deserted as the ice has only recently left and the lakes are now open but still too cold to swim and enjoy. But with temps in the 80's predicted, it shouldn't take too long to warm up and the water will be filled with kids for the rest of the summer.
Nice short walk to revive the spirits |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate Some of the early spring flowers are blooming and trees are in full bloom. |
