| no partners | | A beautiful morning was in the forecast with possibilities of rain later in the day and extending into the weekend, sooooooo, I decided to take a break from my yard work chores and get in a little relaxing hiking time. I had been researching the Falls Creek SNA (Scientific & Natural Area) which lies along the bluffs of the scenic St. Croix River. I have been past this area many times but was unaware of it's existence until I stumbled upon it while doing some Google "hiking".
This would turn out to be my first stop of the day and unfortunately the mosquitoes made sure it would also be my shortest  As I headed down a barely visible trail, I was immediately set upon by hordes of the humming, stinging little  even though I had sprayed myself moderately with a repellent. The trail led me down an embankment then up to a narrow ridge that paralleled a small creek about 70 feet below. To my surprise, the creek wasn't flowing even though we have been the victim of more than 14 inches of rain during the month of May.
I continued following the trail through the very wet foliage, stirring up more mosquitoes with each step and finally I had to make a forced retreat and get the heck out of this place. The short hike was enough to wet my appetite for more of this area and I'll return when conditions improve  |
