In keeping up a 4th of July tradition I headed up to my brother's place in Wisconsin for a day of relaxing and hanging out with the Olson Family. I was constantly reminded of how sick Doug was last year but he was still insistent that the party must go on. Although Doug's cancer claimed his life, and he could no longer be with us, he kept cropping up in our conversations as though he was still with us.

It was a quiet morning on the 4th as most of the family members had arrived late last night and were slowly coming around. Games were spread out on the lawn, a bonfire was starting to smoke in the fire pit, coolers were hauled out and stashed in shady locations and the lawn chairs were everywhere. As day turned into evening, the bonfire grew in size and the coolers visited more frequently while hot dogs and brats sizzled on the grill. When the sun finally set and the Northwoods became dark, the sounds and sights of the 4th were all around us with Sky rockets exploding in colorful burst high above the distant trees. Somewhere around midnight, I bid the younger generation goodnight and made my way off to an awaiting bed.

I woke up early Saturday morning as everyone still slept so I went for a stroll through the woods, past the pond now overflowing following the recent rains, past the deer stand where Dough and I spent so many hours together remembering the past and solving the world's problems as we waited for a deer to pass within range and through the woods still recovering from the storms that claimed so many trees a couple of years ago. I finally got chased out of the woods by the masses of mosquitoes and deer fly's and frequently paused to remove wood ticks crawling up my legs. Leaving the woods, I walked North on the blacktop road, passing many patches of wildflowers growing in the moist soil of the ditches, past the driveways and roads leading into the dense green forest to homes and cabins hidden a short distance away and past roadside ponds where the frogs are still singing from last night. I scared up a few deer along the way, listened to the birds singing and watched the hawks soaring high above me. It was good to be alone with my thoughts and memories...... Miss you Doug, even though you weren't there, your presence was all around.
