| no partners | | My first time up Thumb Butte and it was pretty cool. I was solo and bad weather was all around. I initially wanted to do Granite, but didn't want to chance any exposed weather - TB look like it was an easy escape if something blew in.
I paid the 5 bucks and started up the steep paved trail to the left. I initially had no intention of climbing since I only thought it was roped summit, but I saw non-climbers near the summit so my curiosity was peaked. Once I got to the saddle, there was a well worn trail headed towards what looked like a doable/possible route. I talked to a few people and one man with his two younger kids pointed me in the right direction and I climbed up this little, semi-exposed Class III+ route...was pretty fun.
After bouldering around to the tippy top and taking in the great views...I climbed back down (much easier BTW) and completed the loop.
Was a great day and great climb with beautiful weather and surrounding cloud cover (see pics). |
