Scottsdale and Fountain Hills wanted to connect their hiking preserves and this is the answer. Fountain hills had already built their portion a couple years ago, up to their preserve border. Scottsdale had some obstacles to overcome, which included Arizona Trust land between the two preserves.
Knowing the trail would eventually be built, last year I hiked off trail at the Sunrise Tr equestrian hitching post and wandered around envisioning where the new trail track would be.

On my ‘wandering’ hike, I mostly stayed up on the little ridgeline that ends at Pk 3585 and looked north and east. Since the actual valley is privately owned, I knew the new trail would have to stay high and wrap around two ridge lines, and that’s what the Andrews - Kinsey Tr does.
This trail is only about 2.6 miles long from the Sunrise Tr to the Western Loop Tr, but plan on hiking a longer way, as you need to hike other trails to get to this trail. As usual, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills did a great job of making a smooth, safe trail.
The good thing about this connector trail is that it opens up a multitude of loops and lasso-loops for hikers. Once you get into the Fountain Hills trail system, you can connect into the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and then back into the Scottsdale preserve. Lots of choices.
Even an out-and-back from the Sunrise Trail 145th St TH would be about 9.2 miles.
On this hike, I did a loop that included ending up back at the trailhead via a gated community. Time constraints got in my way from extending the hike or even backtracking to the TH.
Ironically, I won’t recommend my actual ‘end-part’ of my hike, but the actual Andrews - Kinsey Tr is very worthy, and the reason for building it is commendable. |
