I’ve been meaning to hike the new connector trail between the Scottsdale trail system and the Fountain Hills preserve since I saw about a year ago that it was completed. The weather for this day was perfect. I started from the Sunrise TH, hiked out to the end of the Andrews-Kinsey Trail, and turned back.
The hike up Sunrise is the most of the elevation gain on this hike. Just a bit past the second junction for the spur trail to Sunrise Peak is the junction for the Andrews-Kinsey. Andrews-Kinsey is level for the most part, with a few up and down sections, but nothing extreme.

This trail had a lot of nice views and was nicer than I expected. At the junction with the Sunrise Trail you can see all of metro Phoenix all the way out to the west side, and along the trail views to the east are very good, the typical Four Peaks, Supes, etc. The trail takes a horseshoe shape along the top of Adero Canyon, which is the new development in Fountain Hills that’s now getting started. Along the Canyon bottom, the grading work has started and is very visible, along with a road grader currently sitting idle. The good part of this is that an agreement has finally been hashed out with MCO Properties that will allow for a new trailhead at the entrance and will connect to the Fountain Hills Preserve trails much easier. I’ve seen that in plan reviews as part of my job, so it’s on the way and getting built.

When I got up there, the wind was really strong. I welcomed this very much. Seems like just the other day I was hiking locally in the 110+ temps, slogging that out, so it was nice to hike in much cooler and more comfortable weather. The skies were nice and clear, giving a lot of nice views across the valley and to the east. Andrews-Kinsey has much less foot traffic than Sunrise. I only saw 2 bikers at the junction of A-K and Sunrise on my way back, but the tire tracks are all over both trails. Had a few conversations with some other former Pittsburghers as typically happens in my Steeler gear. Finished shortly after 11am and got some Senor Taco for lunch in Fountain Hills before heading home.

Looking forward next weekend to hiking up in the Seattle area.
