I bought new hiking boots. I hate buying new hiking boots. Will they fit? Will they support, but not restrict movements? Will they produce ‘hot-spots’ on my feet? etc etc.
One way to find out is to first test them on pavement, then go on a trail, and finally go off trail up a mountain. That’s what this hike was all about, and I’m only ’50-50’ satisfied with the new boots. I’ll do another couple hikes with them and decide to keep or exchange them.
I hate buying new boots.
Background:
Peak 3585 is in the Scottsdale portion of the McDowell Mountains. Peak 3585 is three peaks (and 1.7 miles) southeast of Thompson Pk. and also right next to Peak 3804, which I have climbed a few times.
BobP commented on my last Pk 3804 hike, that Pk 3804 and this peak, Pk 3585, are referred to (in books) as the “Twin Peaks”. From the northern end of the Phoenix valley, they do look like twins. The further south you go, not so much. Their height difference is more pronounced the further south you go .
The Hike:
I started at Sunrise Tr (145th St TH) and transitioned to the new Andrews - Kinsey Tr, near the equestrian hitching post. From the A-K Trail, I went off-trail, up and down Pk 3585, as there is no trail up. The off-trail hike up Pk 3585 is not as steep as it’s twin, and all the normal sticky plants are avoidable. (Its ‘twin’, Pk 3804 does have a very steep, switchback trail).
The top of Pk 3585 is small and flat, and is about 1/2 the size of a tennis court.
Peak 3585 is lower than its ‘twin’ by 219 Ft, however the higher twin is so close that it appears to be much higher.
I looked for a summit log, but none was found. I don’t think this peak is climbed very often.
Atop this little peak, there are unique views of familiar landmarks, which is always fun.
I took a different track down to the A-K Trail, then transitioned back to the Sunrise Tr.
The new boots worked ‘just OK’, so I’ll continue the trial-run on a couple more hikes before making my ‘keep-or-exchange’ decision.
Did I mention …….. I hate buying new boots? |
