| no partners | | Those of us lucky enough to live in the Phoenix area have the benefit of living within driving distance of so many parks and preserves with trails--Piestewa, Camelback, North Mountain, Shaw Butte, South Mountain, Pinnacle Peak, McDowell Mountains are all fine examples. We enjoy the trails, and some of them become our 'old standbys'. We probably do them mostly out of convenience because we've memorized each incline, switchback, notable tree, bench, and viewpoint. But we probably don't get excited about them like we do when we find a new, exotic trail somewhere else.
This is why I like to hike known trails in inclement weather. I do this loop often on weekdays after work because it has some nice sunset views and some good elevation change, and it's not far from me. On Sunday, with thunder rumbling, I hiked this loop again. And got soaked...and hailed on. From a small cell mostly over just the preserve while the sun was still shining around it. It was gorgeous, and reminded me why this area was made a preserve in the first place.
