| no partners | | It's one thing to say "I'm going to hike to the river." It's another thing to actually find the water. You can easily get down there, but then there is a thick fringe of vegetation. Following burro trails was no help because they just lead into the reeds where there is swampy water for them to drink. You have to find a steep hill, almost a cliff, which goes to the river but has no flat land at the base of it to support the reeds and tamarisks. The photos and satellite GPS may give you an idea.
It was a lot of fun. Route finding on the way back we wanted to avoid going so far north. Used GPS, burro trails, and following ridges and washes. That was fun, too. Lots of nice views of the river, The Needles Mountains, Chemehuevi Mountains (on the California side), etc. We never saw a burro, but they're out there. They sure make good trails, but otherwise they are a land management nightmare. |
