Stayed up way too late last night to get up early today to see any snow. I didn't wanna drive too far for my first hike of the year but I wanted a good workout, so I did my closest local hike. The trails were pretty busy, but not the worst I've seen them. Didn't start until about 1pm. It was really cold at first, but when the sun came out I took my jacket off and did the rest of my hike in a t-shirt. Saw some snow on the McDowells and up in Cave Creek and the New River Mtns.

Did the loop CCW starting from the 7th ave TH. Went up the steep SW side of North Mountain, which was quite a workout. Went down the paved side and decided to go back up again to get over 2000 AEG today. Going down North Mountain the 2nd time I saw a couple guys coming up the trail pushing a huge wooden Christmas tree. One of the guys was actually inside of it! I stopped and took a photo of them, and they said they were pushing it all the way to the top. Not sure why they were doing this exactly, but this is the kind of thing that usually makes urban hikes just as interesting to me as wilderness hikes.

Made my way over to the Shaw Butte. There were hundreds of quail out today. Just a couple people at the summit. It was just beautiful out there at this point. Went over to the other little peak to the west as I was going down Shaw Butte as I still didn't want my hike to be over. Really enjoyed this first hike of the year, and I feel good about the year ahead.
