| no partners | | I've seen numerous coyotes in the wild over the years but never photographed one until today. I had just turned S on the 306 from the north dam, camera in hand and hoping to capture a few images of some low-flying birds i believed to be common nighthawks. I spotted movement about 50 yards ahead and seeing it was a swift-moving coyote coming down off the east side of Shaw Butte just before sunset, I hit the shutter button four times without focusing. Didn't feel I had time to go to continuous shooting. Luckily two of these single shots turned out OK.
I'd left the VC about 1815 to check out plant life. Ironwoods and saguaros seem a long way from blooming, but a few palo verde in the ravines clutched to a few remaining blooms. Most were on the ground. Saw three desert cottontails right off the bat, two being little bunnies and ripe for a hungry coyote's meal. Lots of Gambel's quail. The trails were fairly busy and included a male jogger who stopped at least twice to do ugly-looking calisthenics. Beautiful evening under a full moon, though temps were in the 90s when I began the loop. |
